Release date: 2000-12-13 - 743. Minimum wage [2009] ArchivedArticles and reports: 75-001-X201010313246Geography: CanadaDescription:
All provinces and territories set minimum wages in their employment standards legislation. This update uses the Labour Force Survey to examine the characteristics of those who work at or below the minimum wage for experienced adults in each jurisdiction. The incidence of working for minimum wage has increased each year since 2006 but remains concentrated among youth, particularly young women.
Release date: 2000-12-11 - Journals and periodicals: 72F0020XGeography: CanadaDescription:
This research paper summarizes the approach, methodology and results of a study of the labour market behaviour of persons in various categories of attachment to the labour market. The analysis focuses on the transition probabilities for various categories of labour market attachment. Specifically, the study will include a discussion of the behavioural differences of the following groups:
a) a comparison of transitions from U (unemployed), M (marginally attached - wants work) and N (not attached - does not want work); b) a further breakdown of the transitions from U by active searchers, passive searchers, those on temporary layoff and short-term future starts; c) a further breakdown of transitions for M by reason for not searching; and d) a further breakdown of transitions from N by long-term future starts and other.
The study will be based on 1997-1999 Labour Force Survey data.
Release date: 2000-01-14 - Surveys and statistical programs – Documentation: 71F0023XDescription:
This paper is an overview of the activities undertaken by Statistics Canada over the past several decades in the field of measuring and valuing unpaid work in all of its many forms. It was first prepared in the early 1990s when the Agency's accomplishments in the field of unpaid work were not as widely known as Statistics Canada would have liked. With each significant new achievement of the Agency, this note has been updated and further updates will be produced in step with the Agency's continuing outputs in this important area.

Release date: 2010-05-17 - 376. Postsecondary Enrolment Trends to 2031: Three Scenarios ArchivedTable: 81-595-M2007058Geography: CanadaDescription: This report applies various assumptions regarding future participation rates in postsecondary education to projected demographic trends to create three scenarios that estimate the potential future population of students in postsecondary institutions in Canada and the provinces. Projections are provided separately for enrolments at the college and the university levels for three age cohorts: 17 to 19 year-olds, 20 to 24 year-olds and 25 to 29 year-olds. Demographic trends and participation rates in college and in university both vary widely across provinces. To reflect these differences, the analysis is presented at both a national level and for each of the ten provinces. At the national level, the sample size is large enough to allow analysis of trends in both full- and part-time enrolment at the national level; at the provincial level, we constrain our enquiry to full-time only. Demographic data on historical and projected population trends for each of the three age cohorts was provided by Demography Division, Statistics Canada, for the 1990 to 2031 period. Historical college and university participation rates were calculated as the ratio of enrolment to population for the three age cohorts as reported by the Labour Force Survey (LFS). We capture enrolments for the academic year through averaging enrolments over the eight-month period between September and April, for the academic years from 1990/1991 to 2005/2006. Because of the coverage of the LFS, the population considered is that of the ten provinces. Projections of possible future enrolment levels are provided based on three sets of assumptions or 'what if' scenarios: Scenario 1: Maintaining the status quo What if college and university participation rates remain at the average level over the 2003/2004 to 2005/2006 period? Scenario 2: Growth in line with historical trends What if national postsecondary participation rates were to maintain historical trends observed over the 1990/1991 to 2005/2006 period until 2016/2017, remaining constant thereafter? Scenario 3: Closing the gender gap What if, in future, male participation rates in postsecondary education matched the higher rates observed for females over the 2002/2003 to 2005/2006 period?Release date: 2007-11-21

- Articles and reports: 36-28-0001202500700005Description: Recent trade tensions between the United States (U.S.) and Canada have raised questions around the impact of potential job losses related to tariffs. A recent article revealed that, in general, jobs in industries dependent on U.S. demand for Canadian exports (IDUSCEXs) are well-paying and have many favourable non-wage job characteristics, but not all industries within the broader IDUSCEX grouping ranked relatively high in these measures. The current article follows up this work by investigating the socioeconomic characteristics of workers employed in IDUSCEXs, which could play a key role in how affected workers might adapt to potential job losses.Release date: 2025-07-23
- Articles and reports: 36-28-0001202500600003Description: Previous research indicates that immigrants who obtain citizenship in the receiving country gain various benefits, including enhanced legal status, expanded rights, increased political and civic engagement, and a stronger sense of collective identity and belonging. However, empirical studies remain inconclusive on whether acquiring citizenship improves immigrants' labour market outcomes. This paper asks two questions. First, is Canadian citizenship correlated with better economic outcomes among immigrants in Canada? Second, if so, does citizenship acquisition lead to an improvement in labour market outcomes?Release date: 2025-06-25
- Articles and reports: 36-28-0001202500500002Description: While it is challenging to estimate the number of job losses that may be associated with U.S. tariffs, it is possible to describe the quality of jobs at risk of being affected by a decline in U.S. demand for Canadian products. This article addresses this issue by examining a multitude of job quality measures in industries dependent on U.S. demand for Canadian exports.Release date: 2025-05-28

- Articles and reports: 81-595-M2025001Description: This fact sheet examines changes in employment, unemployment and rates of youth not in employment, education or training (NEET) among persons aged 15 to 29, by condensed academic year (October to March) over the past years (2018/2019 to 2023/2024). To contextualize the changing NEET rate, this paper will first describe trends in youth labour market conditions. Results are subsequently presented by age group, sex at birth, racialized group, and immigrant status, highlighting the impacts of changing economic conditions on NEET rates across various demographic groups.Release date: 2025-05-01

Release date: 2021-01-25 - 8. Transition of Labour Force Survey Data Processing to the Social Survey Processing Environment (SSPE) ArchivedSurveys and statistical programs – Documentation: 75-005-M2019001Description:
The production of statistics from the Labour Force Survey (LFS) involves many activities, one of which is data processing. This step involves the verification and correction of survey data when required in order to produce microdata files. Beginning in January 2019, LFS processing will be transitioned to a new system, the Social Survey Processing Environment. This document describes the development and testing that preceded the implementation of the new system, and demonstrates that the transition is expected to have minimal impact on LFS estimates and be transparent to users of LFS data.
Release date: 2019-02-08 - Surveys and statistical programs – Documentation: 71-526-XDescription:
The Canadian Labour Force Survey (LFS) is the official source of monthly estimates of total employment and unemployment. Following the 2011 census, the LFS underwent a sample redesign to account for the evolution of the population and labour market characteristics, to adjust to changes in the information needs and to update the geographical information used to carry out the survey. The redesign program following the 2011 census culminated with the introduction of a new sample at the beginning of 2015. This report is a reference on the methodological aspects of the LFS, covering stratification, sampling, collection, processing, weighting, estimation, variance estimation and data quality.
