- Articles and reports: 82-003-X202501000001Description: Missing teeth serves as a cumulative indicator of lifelong oral health deterioration, primarily resulting from dental caries and periodontitis, though trauma and other factors may also contribute to this outcome. The association between oral health and general health is not yet fully understood. This study examines the association between missing teeth, mortality, and hospitalization outcomes.Release date: 2025-10-15

Release date: 2025-10-02 - Articles and reports: 82-003-X202500900001Description: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a clustering of multiple risk factors, including abdominal obesity (or high waist circumference), elevated triglycerides, low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high fasting blood glucose, and high blood pressure. MetS is an important contributor to cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Research indicates that MetS doubles the risk of cardiovascular disease and increases the risk of diabetes fivefold. Using the most recent nationally representative data from the Canadian Health Measures Survey, this study provides an updated prevalence of MetS and its components among Canadian adults aged 18 to 79 years by age group and sex.Release date: 2025-09-17
- Articles and reports: 82-003-X202500900002Description: To better understand the interplay between adiposity and metabolic health, joint phenotypes have been used to categorize people as being metabolically healthy or metabolically unhealthy while having a body mass index indicative of obesity, overweight, or normal weight. This study examines the prevalence of these phenotypes in adults, the factors associated with them, and their relationship with adverse health outcomes.Release date: 2025-09-17
- Articles and reports: 82-003-X202500600002Description: Oral contraceptives (OCs) have been legally available in Canada since 1969. OCs remain the most common method of reversible contraception in Canada and are among the most commonly used medications by reproductive-aged women in Canada. Using data from the Canadian Health Measures Survey, this study examines the prevalence of, and factors associated with, OC use among non-pregnant, reproductive-aged (15 to 49) women in Canada by sociodemographic characteristics and other factors.Release date: 2025-06-18
- Table: 82-570-XGeography: Province or territoryDescription: The Health of Canadians report brings together important health data, both for the population overall and for specific groups, to provide a comprehensive portrait of population health and to shed light on health disparities. It includes key statistics on population health such as health outcomes (e.g., chronic conditions), health behaviours (e.g., exercise, nutrition), access to health care (e.g., unmet health care needs) and determinants of health (e.g., age, income). The Health of Canadians report is meant to be used by our federal, provincial and territorial partners, as well as health professionals, researchers, and policymakers across the country to inform policies and plans, leading to better, more equitable health outcomes for all Canadians.Release date: 2025-03-05

Release date: 2022-11-16 - Articles and reports: 82-003-X202201000002Description:
Canadian adults spend a large proportion of their day engaged in sedentary behaviour, which in excess, is a risk factor for hypertension, obesity, depression, chronic conditions and premature mortality. Using data from the Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS) and the new Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for Adults aged 18-64 years and 65 years and older, the purpose of this study is to compare the percentages of Canadians meeting three different sedentary thresholds (less than and equal to 3 hours per day of screen time, less than and equal to 7 per day of self-reported sitting time and less than and equal to 9 hours per day of accelerometer-measured sedentary time).
Release date: 2022-10-19 - Articles and reports: 82-003-X202200800001Description:
The physical activity (PA) recommendation was recently revised in the Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for Adults. The 150 minutes per week of moderate-to-vigorous intensity PA (MVPA) went from requiring that MVPA be accrued in bouts of 10 minutes or more (bouted) to having no bout requirement (non-bouted). Using adult accelerometer data from three combined cycles of the nationally representative Canadian Health Measures Survey, this study compared adherence to the bouted and non-bouted recommendations, and assessed differences in sociodemographic, health and fitness measures.

Hypertension is a common condition experienced by close to one-quarter of the adult population in Canada. There is evidence that this condition or the medications used to treat it may lead to hearing health problems. The purpose of this study is to quantify associations between hypertension and hearing health problems—defined as having hearing loss, tinnitus or both conditions for adults aged 19 to 79 years. Data from cycles 3 (2012 to 2013) and 4 (2014 to 2015) of the Canadian Health Measures Survey are used.

Release date: 2021-10-20 - 39. Data profile: Expanding the research potential of the Canadian Health Measures Survey using paired respondent data ArchivedArticles and reports: 82-003-X202100700001Description: The family environment is an important influence on the health and behaviours of children. Few large-scale datasets include detailed and objectively measured health data about multiple individuals from the same family who are living in the same household. The Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS) is a repeating, cross-sectional survey that selects two members of a household-a child and a randomly selected older member of the household aged 12 to 79 years-with at least one child aged 3 to 11 years in residence. These paired respondent records, available in the CHMS relationship files, provide unique opportunities to researchers interested in examining associations between two members of the same household for health behaviours and outcomes. This paper highlights the unique features, recommendations for use and research potential of paired data in the CHMS relationship files.Release date: 2021-07-21
