Description: The focus of this portrait is the analysis of the sociodemographic and ethnocultural diversity and socioeconomic outcomes of the Chinese populations in Canada. The portrait uses data from the Census of Population (1996 to 2021), the 2011 National Household Survey, the 2020 General Social Survey – Social Identity, the 2022 Canadian Survey on Disability and the 2024 Labour Force Survey. An intersectional approach is used to explore the relationships between multiple diversity measures.

Description: Indigenous-owned businesses are a growing and important component of Canada’s economic landscape. These businesses not only contribute to entrepreneurship and community development but also serve as important sources of employment for Indigenous people. This study represents a novel contribution to the evidence base. Statistics Canada first helped close a critical data gap by developing a framework to identify Indigenous business owners and Indigenous-owned businesses. Building on that foundation, the present analysis extends the work to fill another gap, providing data on Indigenous employment within Indigenous-owned businesses.

It discusses the changes made to the definition of the census family for 2001, and how historical comparability is affected. The report also describes aspects of data collection and processing that could have an impact on the quality of the variable Relationship to Person 1, and how this variable, along with the related demographic variables - sex, age, marital status and common-law status - is processed to ensure consistency and to produce derived variables at the family level.

This kit provides teachers with innovative classroom materials involving the results of the 2001 Census. Activities are available for elementary, intermediate and secondary schools; are classroom-ready; and have been classroom-tested by professional educators. Minimal preparation time is required.

Activities are grouped according to subject, using census terminology. For example, Activities 1 to 3 deal with Population Counts, the first variable released for the 2001 Census.

The 2001 Census Results Teacher's Kit activities are appropriate for the following subjects: English, Mathematics, Art, Social Sciences, Geography, History, Family Studies and Informatics. Suggested grade levels are indicated on each activity and all necessary tables, charts, graphs and data are included.

The 1996 Census Handbook provides a non-technical overview of the complete census process, from content determination to the dissemination of products and services. It also discusses data quality, confidentiality issues, and gives examples of different applications of census data. A brief history of Canadian censuses is presented as well.

The 2001 Census Dictionary provides detailed information on all of the concepts, universes, variables and geographic terms of the 2001 Census. The information provided for each variable includes a definition, the associated census question(s), the applicable response categories or classifications and special notes, for instance, on historical aspects.

New this year in the Internet version is the inclusion of supplemental plain language definitions for certain variables, without census or Statistics Canada jargon, to help users better understand the meaning of the definitions. The Internet version of the 2001 Census Dictionary will be updated periodically.
