As COVID-19 began to spread throughout Canada and the United States in early 2020, many employees were asked to work from home to help control the spread of the virus. COVID restrictions were more stringent in Canada than in the U.S., at least throughout 2021, and the degree to which Canadian and U.S. employees worked from home during the pandemic may have differed across countries. The goal of this paper is to fill this information gap and analyze the trends in work from home rates between the two countries from May 2020 to December 2021.

In both Canada and the United States, immigrants constitute a disproportionately large share of the supply of university-educated labour trained in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. This article examines the Canada–U.S. differences in the occupational skill utilization and earnings of STEM-educated immigrant workers. Using data from the 2016 Census for Canada and the combined 2015 to 2017 American Community Survey, this analysis focuses on immigrants with a university degree in a STEM field who were aged 25 to 64 and arrived as adults.

This study provides a first look at the skill level requirements of jobs held by Canadian and American workers. In total, the study examines 35 different skills including STEM skills and skills in several complementary areas. Focusing on the skill level requirements of jobs (as opposed to those for workers) is important given that workers’ skills are not guaranteed to be used in their job. The reasons for this include capital investments, technological changes (which may complement or substitute the skills of workers), shifting product demand and the quality of the match between employer demands and workers’ skills.

This paper presents the Second Summit of the Americas Regional Education Indicators Project (PRIE), whose basic goal is to develop a set of comparable indicators for the Americas. This project is led by the Ministry of Education of Chile and has been developed in response to the countries' needs to improve their information systems and statistics. The countries need to construct reliable and relevant indicators to support decisions in education, both within their individual countries and the region as a whole. The first part of the paper analyses the importance of statistics and indicators in supporting educational policies and programs, and describes the present state of the information and statistics systems in these countries. It also discusses the major problems faced by the countries and reviews the countries' experiences in participating in other education indicators' projects or programs, such as the INES Program, WEI Project, MERCOSUR and CREMIS. The 2001 Census defines 27 census metropolitan area (CMAs) and 19 census agglomerations (CAs) with census tracts. This working paper includes three maps for each of these CMAs and CAs. The first map shows the boundary of the CMA/CA and the boundaries of the census subdivision (CSD) components of the CMA/CA for the 1996 Census. The second map shows the transition from 1996 to 2001 (with boundary changes highlighted), and the third map shows the CMA/CA (and component CSDs) as it is defined for the 2001 Census. The paper describes various factors that can result in changes to the boundaries of CMAs and CAs. For the 2001 Census, municipal restructuring is the factor that has had the greatest impact on the boundaries of some CMAs and CAs.The paper also briefly describes and compares the delineation criteria for metropolitan areas in the United States with those for census metropolitan areas in Canada. An indication is given of the impact on the Canadian CMA program if the American metropolitan area criteria were used.

The purpose of this report is to provide an overview of existing methods and techniques making use of personal identifiers to support record linkage. Record linkage can be loosely defined as a methodology for manipulating and / or transforming personal identifiers from individual data records from one or more operational databases and subsequently attempting to match these personal identifiers to create a composite record about an individual. Record linkage is not intended to uniquely identify individuals for operational purposes; however, it does provide probabilistic matches of varying degrees of reliability for use in statistical reporting. Techniques employed in record linkage may also be of use for investigative purposes to help narrow the field of search against existing databases when some form of personal identification information exists.

This paper deals with a problem in internationally comparable economic statistics, namely, the fact that countries measure value added by industry differently. The economic measure, value added, is important both in its own right and because it is a component of other economic measures such as productivity. Value added by industry measures the additional value created by a production process. This additional value, created by factors of production such as labour and capital, may be calculated either before or after deducting the consumption of fixed capital used in production. Thus, gross value added by industry is the value of its output of goods and services less the value of its intermediate consumption of goods and services and net value added as the value of output less the values of both intermediate consumption and consumption of fixed capital.

Time series studies have shown associations between air pollution concentrations and morbidity and mortality. These studies have largely been conducted within single cities, and with varying methods. Critics of these studies have questioned the validity of the data sets used and the statistical techniques applied to them; the critics have noted inconsistencies in findings among studies and even in independent re-analyses of data from the same city. In this paper we review some of the statistical methods used to analyze a subset of a national data base of air pollution, mortality and weather assembled during the National Morbidity and Mortality Air Pollution Study (NMMAPS).
