Statistics Canada is engaged in a project "Information System for Science and Technology" which purpose is to develop useful indicators of activity and a framework to tie them together into a coherent picture of science and technology (S&T) in Canada. The Working papers series is used to publish results of the different initiatives conducted within this project. The produced data are related to the activities, linkages and outcomes of S&T. Several key areas are covered such as: innovation, technology diffusion, human resources in S&T and interrelations between different actors involved in S&T. This series also presents important data tabulations taken from regular surveys on R&D and S&T and made possible because of the existing Project.

Canada is an active competitor in the global economy, an arena in which our knowledge and skills are vital assets. At a time when goods, services and investment flow more freely into and out of the country, much of our international success comes from our knowledge-intensive industries. As a result, the need for skilled workers has intensified and higher education has become an even more important determinant of Canada's overall competitiveness and economic well-being than in the past. Canada's postsecondary education system encompasses universities, colleges and trade/vocational institutions. In 1995 there were 1.67 million part-time and full-time postsecondary students, 52% of whom attended university. Universities, who finances are the focus of this article, therefore serve as major providers of the higher education that is critical to our prosperity.

This paper is a joint project of Human Resources Development Canada and Statistics Canada which uses data from the Canada Sudent Loans Program administrative data system to examine general patterns of Canada Student Loan debt in the 1990-91 to 1995-96 time frame for all full-time students, as well as specific trends in student debt by type of educational institution attended. It does not examine loans received through provincial programs. First, we look at the number of students with Canada Student Loans who entered into repayment and the average values of their loans in 1995 constant dollars. We then go on to analyse trends in loan activity and replayment patterns, including repayment difficulties, loan defaults and bankruptcies, and early repayment in full.

Release date: 2010-02-26 - 2. Statistics Canada's Definition and Classification of Postsecondary and Adult Education Providers in Canada ArchivedSurveys and statistical programs – Documentation: 81-595-M2009071Geography: CanadaDescription:
This document outlines the definitions and the typology now used by Statistics Canada's Centre for Education Statistics to identify, classify and delineate the universities, colleges and other providers of postsecondary and adult education in Canada for which basic enrolments, graduates, professors and finance statistics are produced.
These new rigorous definitions were needed to capture the growing complexity of postsecondary education in Canada. They differentiate the various types of postsecondary institutions, address the blurring distinction between colleges and universities and handle the various forms of possible relationships between institutions.
The document brings closure to the extensive consultation that took place between January 2003 and the spring of 2007 as it summarizes the changes made following the 2004 paper entitled "A New Understanding of Post-secondary Education in Canada: A Discussion Paper".
Such an extensive consultation was deemed necessary to ensure that the typology is useful to the whole sector and that it allows comparisons between provinces and territories despite the significant differences of their respective postsecondary education systems.

The changes aim to address data limitations in the 2001 Census questions and to enhance their relevance to education studies by allowing a better reflection of the range of educational pathways taken by Canadians. The report includes an explanation of the reasons for modifying the 2006 Census education content, a detailed look at each of the changes, and a discussion on historical consistency.
