    This paper is a joint project of Human Resources Development Canada and Statistics Canada which uses data from the Canada Sudent Loans Program administrative data system to examine general patterns of Canada Student Loan debt in the 1990-91 to 1995-96 time frame for all full-time students, as well as specific trends in student debt by type of educational institution attended. It does not examine loans received through provincial programs. First, we look at the number of students with Canada Student Loans who entered into repayment and the average values of their loans in 1995 constant dollars. We then go on to analyse trends in loan activity and replayment patterns, including repayment difficulties, loan defaults and bankruptcies, and early repayment in full.

    The linkages between university research and its contribution to national and regional economies are not well understood. During the summer of 1998, Statistics Canada conducted a pilot survey of intellectual property (IP) commercialization in the higher education sector to begin to measure some of the contributions. The voluntary questionnaire was sent to 81 universities and degree-granting colleges, of which 74 responded. The results show that most universities participate in a wide variety of activities including identifying, protecting, promoting and commercializing IP.

    Description: This comprehensive data visualization tool overviews counts of enrolments and graduations for elementary to postsecondary education. It also includes the cost of tuition for full-time studies at Canadian degree-granting postsecondary public institutions for the current academic year (September to April). Data for this dashboard is related to the following three surveys: Tuition and Living Accommodation Costs (TLAC), Elementary-Secondary Education Survey (ESES), and the Postsecondary Student Information System (PSIS). Each survey will be released separately at a later date.

    For elementary to secondary education, this interactive tool provides an overview of the total enrolment and graduation counts for the five most recent school years. For enrolments, the tool features counts in public schools, private/independent schools, and home-schooling, as well as official languages programs.     For the postsecondary education, this interactive tool features characteristics of students enrolled in, or graduating from postsecondary programs offered in public postsecondary institutions in Canada (such as gender and status of student in Canada). It also provides an overview of program characteristics based on the International Standard Classification of Education (ISCED 2011) and on the Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP Canada 2016 cannabis variant) STEM/BHASE groupings.     The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) collects and reports on statistics from its member countries for various subject matter fields. In order to properly compare these statistics, the OE,CD develops common concepts and measurement standards. For the field of research and development (R&D) statistics, the OECD's proposed standard practice for R&D surveys is detailed in the Frascati Manual (OECD, 2002). However, not all OECD countries' national practices align with the Frascati Manual standards. The OECD receives Canadian R&D data from surveys conducted by Statistics Canada. While the general concepts of the Frascati Manual are integrated with Statistics Canada's survey framework, national variations in reporting with the OECD still exist. One of these national differences in data presentation can be found in the allocation of public general university funds.

    The analysis for this report is based on data from the Youth in Transition Survey (YITS). The survey was designed by Human Resources and Social Development Canada and Statistics Canada. YITS is a longitudinal survey, which collects information on educational and labour market pathways of a sample of young Canadians in the 18 to 20 age group in 1999. Respondents were asked to provide a range of information on their education and employment experiences as well as information on their personal characteristics. They were interviewed four times since the implementation of the survey, in 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2006. In this report, the data used are from the first four cycles and describe where they stood in their school to work pathway in December 2005 when they were 24 to 26 years of age.

    This report is a follow-up of a previous study of postsecondary participation (Shaienks and Gluszynski, 2007) which found that the overall postsecondary dropout rate was 15%. That rate however, differs across all types of institution and by demographic, family and school characteristics. This paper explores the impact of those characteristics on participation, graduation and dropping out of different types of postsecondary institution.

    Three new variables were developed to account for the type of institution attended by the student and the status in each of them. The university status, the college status and the other postsecondary status allow us to determine independently the outcome of participation in the different types of institution and profile graduates, continuers and especially drop outs according to their specific characteristics.

    This report presents findings from the 2004/2005 Survey of Earned Doctorates (SED). The survey was administered to all students graduating from a doctoral program at a Canadian University. The 2004/2005 SED is the second edition of the annual survey.

    In the 2004/2005 academic year there were approximately 4,000 new doctoral graduates, adding to the stock of highly specialized human capital in Canada. Over three quarters of Canada's PhD graduates are completing their studies in a science or engineering field, with the most popular field of study being biological sciences. Although PhD graduates accounted for roughly 0.4% of the population, Canada lags behind many other OECD countries in this regard.

    Most graduates were finding success upon completion of their degrees as a large majority of graduates (73%) had firm plans to be working or continuing their studies by the time of graduation. The proportion of students who graduated without any graduate student debt decreased from the year before to reach 59%. Over three quarters of the graduates plan to stay in Canada to either work or continue their education.

    Description:

    In this study, we use new Canadian data containing detailed information on standardized test scores, school marks, parental and peer influences, and other socio-economic background characteristics of boys and girls to try to account for the large gender gap in university attendance. Among 19-year-old youth in 2003, 38.8% of girls had attended university, compared with only 25.7% of boys. However, young men and women were about equally likely to attend college. We find that differences in observable characteristics between boys and girls account for more than three quarters (76.8%) of the gap in university participation. In order of importance, the main factors are differences in school marks at age 15, standardized test scores in reading at age 15, study habits, parental expectations and the university earnings premium relative to high school. Altogether, the four measures of academic abilities used in the study "overall marks, performance on standardized reading tests, study habits and repeating grade" collectively account for 58.9% of the gender gap in university participation. These results suggest that understanding why girls outperform boys in the classroom may be a key to understanding the gender divide in university participation.

    These new rigorous definitions were needed to capture the growing complexity of postsecondary education in Canada. They differentiate the various types of postsecondary institutions, address the blurring distinction between colleges and universities and handle the various forms of possible relationships between institutions.

    The document brings closure to the extensive consultation that took place between January 2003 and the spring of 2007 as it summarizes the changes made following the 2004 paper entitled "A New Understanding of Post-secondary Education in Canada: A Discussion Paper".

    Such an extensive consultation was deemed necessary to ensure that the typology is useful to the whole sector and that it allows comparisons between provinces and territories despite the significant differences of their respective postsecondary education systems.
