Description:

Monthly international trade in services statistics are compiled as a nowcast of the quarterly international trade in services data. Statistics Canada first projects the next quarter’s totals (using previous quarterly actuals as an input) via an autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model and then disaggregates the quarter using a monthly indicator series. Adjustments are made each month as new information is made available.

Users have the option of selecting imports and exports by NAICS code, the country of origin and the country of destination. Data are monthly and on a customs basis.

Description: These indexes are calculated to establish and adjust the Post Living Allowance (PLA) paid to Canadian government employees serving outside of Canada. They are comparative measurements that numerically express the difference between the retail prices of a representative basket of goods and services at a foreign location with prices for a similar basket of goods and services in Ottawa.

Three separate reports are provided to reflect the specific terms and conditions of service for these personnel. A description of each report is provided below.

Foreign Service Directives Post Indexes

These indexes are calculated for personnel serving under the terms and conditions of the Foreign Service Directives (FSDs). They reflect circumstances for personnel who may have access to certain goods and services that are free of duties or taxes or to sources of supply that are not available to the general public. Where employees do not have (either directly or indirectly) duty-free purchasing privileges, departmental administrators must consult with Statistics Canada to calculate an additional index to reflect the specific circumstances in effect at that post.

Global Affairs Canada (GAC) Post Indexes

These indexes are calculated for cooperants and advisors serving under the Foreign Assignment Directive, whose terms and conditions are governed by Global Affairs Canada (GAC).

Canadian Forces Post Indexes

These indexes are calculated for Canadian Forces members serving under either the terms and conditions of the Military Foreign Service Instructions (MFSIs) or the Foreign Service Directives (FSDs). They reflect circumstances for personnel who may have access to sources of supply that are not available to the general public. These personnel also may have access to certain goods and services that are free of duties or taxes or may be provided with supplies or allowances by the Department of National Defence or the United Nations. The indexes in this listing are not appropriate for use by non-military personnel.

Description: The international trade monthly interactive dashboard is a comprehensive analytical tool that presents monthly changes in Canada's international merchandise trade data on a balance of payments basis. Four sections are available: 1) a page summarizing the monthly results; 2) a dashboard showing data by product; 3) a dashboard on Canada's principal trading partners; and 4) graphs that show change in price and volume indices on international trade.

Description: The Canadian International Merchandise Trade (CIMT) Web Application offers the most detailed commodity trade data using the Harmonized System (HS) classification of goods (the 8-digit commodity level for exports and the 10-digit for imports). The CIMT Web Application also offers data at the international 6-digit commodity level. With the CIMT Web Application the user can visualize the latest information on customs based monthly trade through tables and charts as well as a time series report. For a selected period of time, one can also customize its selection and visualize trade, export or import, data for a specific trading partner, a specific province and a specific variable such as value, volume and a percentage change on a monthly or annual basis. The application has also the ability to retrieve the top 25 commodities traded between a selected by the user geography, Canada or a province, and trading partner, the World or a specific country, for the month of interest. When desired, the user can copy the data seen on the screen into their preferred data manipulation software.

Description: This interactive dashboard provides access to current and historical data for the building construction price indexes, by type of building, for the census metropolitan areas (CMAs) of St. John's, Halifax, Moncton, Montréal, Ottawa-Gatineau (Ontario part), Toronto, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, as well as a composite of these eleven CMAs, in a dynamic and customizable format. It allows users to view the index series, quarter-over-quarter percent changes, year-over-year percent changes, as well as the largest increases and decreases for the current period. Additionally, users can view the weight of each CMA in the eleven CMA composite measured in percentage.

Twelve administrative data files are reviewed to determine if some of them could be used to derive migration data, in case the universality of the currently used family allowance files be limited, as a result of federal legislation.

It is found that none of the twelve files have strengths and weaknesses strictly comparable to those of the family allowance files. Further developments of the Health Care, and to a lesser extent the Old Age Security files are highly recommended.

Description:

In Canada, provincial and federal demographers have attempted to use various sets of administrative data to estimate migration flows. This paper presents the development of intra-provincial migration estimates using driver’s licence data in Ontario. An evaluation of these migration estimates has been carried out by comparing with those derived from the income tax data by Statistics Canada. Both files provide equally good and complimentary estimates of intra-provincial migration.

This paper examines the use of administrative files from Alberta’s Health Care Insurance Plans combined with Vital Statistics data as inputs for estimating population. Results, which are presented and compared with Census data, indicate that Health Care data can be used to produce accurate population estimates at the provincial level and for smaller areas such as census divisions and municipalities.

The accuracy of small area population estimates derived from a regression based model is heavily dependent on the ability of the indicator data selected to accurately reflect population change. Hence, prior knowledge as to the characteristics of the administrative data used as potential population indicators in a regression model is important. This report summarizes the strengths and weaknesses associated with the use of residential hydro accounts in the British Columbia regression based population estimation model.

This paper describes a method of producing current age/sex specific population estimates for small areas utilizing as inputs total population estimates, birth and death data and estimates of historical residual net migration. An evaluation based on the 1981 Census counts for census divisions and school districts in British Columbia is presented.

Description:

A methodology has been developed for producing population estimates by single years of age and sex for small areas (census divisions and census metropolitan areas). To assure reliability, the estimates by single years of age are grouped into five years and only these grouped data are recomended for dissemination. They are based on the age-sex composition of population from the last census, births by sex, deaths by single years of age and sex, estimates of migration by age and sex, and counts of family allowance recipients in the age group 1-14 years.

Unit and item nonresponse almost always occur in surveys and censuses. The larger its size the larger its potential effect will be on survey estimates. It is, therefore, important to cope with it at every stage where they can be affected. At varying degrees the size of nonresponse can be coped with at design, field and processing stages. The nonresponse problems have an impact on estimation formulas for various statistics as a result of imputations and weight adjustments along with survey weights in the estimates of means, totals, or other statistics. The formulas may be decomposed into components that include response errors, the effect of weight adjustment for unit nonresponse, and the effect of substitution for nonresponse. The impacts of the design, field, and processing stages on the components of the estimates are examined.

Conventional methods of inference in survey sampling are critically examined. The need for conditioning the inference on recognizable subsets of the population is emphasized. A number of real examples involving random sample sizes are presented to illustrate inferences conditional on the realized sample configuration and associated difficulties. The examples include the following: estimation of (a) population mean under simple random sampling; (b) population mean in the presence of outliers; (c) domain total and domain mean; (d) population mean with two-way stratification; (e) population mean in the presence of non-responses; (f) population mean under general designs. The conditional bias and the conditional variance of estimators of a population mean (or a domain mean or total), and the associated confidence intervals, are examined.

Description: Spatial information products provide users with data for visualization, reference, mapping and spatial analysis using geographical information systems (GIS). Available files include spatial environmental data as well as documentation and metadata. This information is released as part of a suite of products associated with the Census of Environment (CoE). The CoE organizes data about Canada’s natural environment using the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting – Ecosystem Accounting international statistical standard, which takes a spatial approach to accounting for Canada’s ecosystems and natural capital.

Description: This product contains gridded datasets of annual and 30-year average estimates of water yield. Tracking water yield—an estimate of renewable water supply derived from National Water Data Archive (HYDAT) streamflow data—provides information to help understand water resources available for human use and ecosystem needs. Annual datasets are available for the years 1971 to 2021 and cover southern Canada. Thirty-year averages are available for 1971-2000, 1981-2010, and 1991-2020. They cover the terrestrial and freshwater extent of Canada, except for the Arctic Archipelago.

The guide provides an overview of the Postsecondary Student Information System (PSIS) and the Registered Apprenticeship Information System (RAIS), the general methodology used to create longitudinal indicators, and important technical information for users.

It is designed to help data users by serving as a guide to the concepts and measures of the survey as well as the technical details of the survey’s design, field work and data processing. This guide is meant to provide users with helpful information on how to use and interpret survey results. The discussion on data quality also allows users to review the strengths and limitations of the data for their particular needs.

Chapter 1 of this guide provides an overview of the 2022 IPS and IPS–NIS by introducing the survey background and objectives. Chapter 2 outlines the survey’s themes and explains the key concepts and definitions used for the survey. Chapters 3 to 6 cover important aspects of the survey methodology, sampling design, data collection and processing.
