    In 2004, as part of its General Social Survey program, Statistics Canada conducted a survey on victimization and public perceptions of crime and the justice system. It was the fourth time that the General Social Survey (GSS) had examined victimization - previous surveys were conducted in 1988, 1993, and 1999. The target population was Canadians aged 15 years and older living in the ten provinces.

    This report provides an overview of the main findings from cycle 18 of the General Social Survey on Victimization and makes comparisons with previous survey cycles. The analysis focuses on Canadians' outlook on crime and the criminal justice system, as well as their fear of crime. Variations by province are also presented.

    This product presents current and historical cancer incidence and cancer survival statistics in Canada, as well as links to the Cancer Record and Canadian Cancer Registry (CCR) procedures manuals.

    The Annual Cancer Incidence in Canada tables provide information on the number of new cases and the rates of both cancer tumours and patients from 1992 onwards, by five-year age-groups and sex for all Canadian provinces and territories.

    The Cancer Survival Statistics tables provide site-specific five-year observed and relative survival estimates for cases diagnosed from 1992 onwards. In addition to age-specific and age-standardized national (excl. Quebec) estimates, all ages (15 to 99 years) and age-standardized provincial estimates are available.

    The Cancer Record is a newsletter for cancer registries in Canada. Its purpose is to improve the quality and consistency of data submitted to the CCR.

    The compendium of Canadian Cancer Registry procedures manuals set out the rules for reporting cancer data to the CCR for all provincial and territorial cancer registries.

    Links are also provided to other Statistics Canada data on cancer. The health regions cancer rates are part of the Health Indicators. The Comparable Health Indicators present information on health status and health system performance, including cancer incidence age-standardized cancer.

    Description: The 2001 Aboriginal Peoples Survey (APS) is a post-censal survey of adults and children who reported Aboriginal ancestry, Aboriginal identity, registered Indian status and/or Band membership on the 2001 Census. Approximately 76,000 adults and 41,000 children living in private households in the provinces and territories were selected to participate in the survey. The data were collected between September 2001 and January 2002. The APS Internet community profiles provide information for communities with 200 or more people that took part in the 2001 Aboriginal Peoples Survey. Data for Arctic communities are aggregated to the regional level while data for Nisga communities are aggregated to the nation level, as are data for James Bay Cree communities. Highlights for adults and children are available. For adults, highlights focus on health, housing, education, language, residential school, communication technology, labour and mobility. The children's section of the profile provides information on general health, health care utilization, activities of daily living and medical conditions, physical injuries, dental care, nutrition, education, social activities and relationships, language, child care arrangements and household information.

    This objective of this report is to present the status of national data on Aboriginal people who come into contact with the criminal justice system as offenders and victims. The report examines the current and potential collection of an individual's Aboriginal identity through various justice-related surveys at Statistics Canada, the challenges within these surveys to collect these data and provides some insight into the quality of these data. The data and sources are examined within the context of information needs for the justice and social policy sectors, and in relation to the preferred method of measuring Aboriginal Identity at Statistics Canada. Data sources examined include the Incident-based Uniform Crime Reporting Survey, the Homicide Survey, the Integrated Criminal Courts Survey, the Adult Corrections Survey, the Youth Custody and Community Services Survey, the Youth Alternative Measures Survey, the Transition Home Survey, the Victim Services Survey and the General Social Survey on Victimization. Finally, the report briefly describes efforts by other countries to improve justice-related information on their indigenous populations.
