- Public use microdata: 99M0001XDescription: The Individuals File, 2011 National Household Survey (Public Use Microdata Files) provides data on the characteristics of the Canadian population. The file contains a 2.7% sample of anonymous responses to the 2011 National Household Survey (NHS) questionnaire. The files have been carefully scrutinized to ensure the complete confidentiality of the individual responses and geographic identifiers have been restricted to provinces/territories and metropolitan areas. With 133 variables, this comprehensive tool is excellent for policy analysts, pollsters, social researchers and anyone interested in modelling and performing statistical regression analysis using National Household Survey data.
Microdata files uniquely provide users access to non-aggregated data. The PUMFs user can group and manipulate these variables to suit data and research requirements. Tabulations excluded from other NHS products can be created or relationships between variables can be analyzed using different statistical tests. PUMFs provide quick access to a comprehensive social and economic database about Canada and its people.
This product, offered on DVD-ROM, contains the data file (in ASCII format); user documentation and supporting information; all licence agreements; and SAS, SPSS and Stata program source codes to enable users to read the set of records. In 2015, Canada witnessed its first gender-balanced federal cabinet. The share of women among candidates in federal elections and elected candidates has been increasing, although the share of women elected to the federal parliament remains lower than the share of female candidates. Using census data from 2016 and 2001, and the 2011 National Household Survey, this study presents a profile of individuals who worked as legislators in 2016 in the federal public administration; provincial or territorial public administration; or municipal, local or regional public administration, and highlights differences in socio-demographic characteristics between male and female legislators.

In light of increasing Canadian immigration levels, an updated analysis of hospitalization patterns among immigrants to Canada, relative to the Canadian-born population, is needed to inform health care system policy and planning. Using immigrant landing administrative data linked to health care data, this descriptive study aims to examine hospitalization rates and leading causes of hospitalization, including mental health in immigrants and the Canadian-born population, stratified by sex and selected immigration characteristics.

Statistics Canada has produced a hierarchical PUMF that relies on perturbation instead of suppression to protect data confidentiality. This paper describes the creation of this new type of PUMF for the Agency. The creation of this PUMF using data perturbation techniques, a first for Statistics Canada, was in many ways a research development project. In the process, ways were devised to avoid overlap with other PUMFs, to adapt and apply risk measures for a multitude of personal and household characteristics, and to carry out perturbations for related characteristics.
