Description: This study uses the Canadian Index of Multiple Deprivation (CIMD) and Census neighbourhood-level income data to examine the issues of flood exposure and socioeconomic disparities at a neighbourhood level. More specifically, this study seeks to further explore the demographic and socio-economic characteristics of areas that have been impacted by flooding over the past four years, as well as whether or not these flooded areas have experienced changes in levels of socio-economic deprivation between 2016 and 2021.

Description: Using smaller-level geographic classifications and well-being data from various waves of the Canadian Social Survey, this study aims to develop a more meaningful classification system beyond the traditional ‘urban-rural’ split which is often applied to Canadian geography. More specifically, this study takes a more nuanced look at the traditional urban-rural split by disaggregating at lower levels of geography in order to better understand geographical differences for select Quality of Life indicators, namely life satisfaction and sense of belonging to local community.

Sample size limitations restricted the focus of the study to women, who represent the vast majority of employees who work in seniors’ homes.

Description: Work arrangements changed during the COVID-19 pandemic, as organizations switched to working from home on a large scale and used digital technologies to adapt to physical distancing mandates. It is largely unknown how changes to work arrangements since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic have impacted persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Canada. This article focuses on whether needs and unmet needs for workplace accommodations (WPAs) among employed Canadians with disabilities have changed since 2017, with the widespread deployment of working from home and digital technologies.

Description: An extensive literature shows wide variations in life expectancy (LE) across various subnational geographic areas. However, little is known about these variations across very small levels of geographic disaggregation in Canada. This study expands the boundaries for such analyses by focusing on metropolitan areas, allowing an examination of small area variations in LE that cannot be ascribed to provincial or federal-level health, social, and other policies and programs, as more than one metropolitan area per province can be studied.

The mandate of the Analytical Studies Branch (ASB) is to provide high-quality, relevant and timely information on economic, health and social issues that are important to Canadians. The branch strategically makes use of expert knowledge and a large range of statistical sources to describe, draw inferences from, and make objective and scientifically supported deductions about the evolving nature of the Canadian economy and society. Research questions are addressed by applying leading-edge methods, including microsimulation and predictive analytics using a range of linked and integrated administrative and survey data. In supporting greater access to data, ASB linked data are made available to external researchers and policy makers to support evidence-based decision making. Research results are disseminated by the branch using a range of mediums (i.e., research papers, studies, infographics, videos, and blogs) to meet user needs. The branch also provides analytical support and training, feedback, and quality assurance to the wide range of programs within and outside Statistics Canada.
