This release contains estimates of total spending on research and development (R&D) in the health field in Canada. Tables demonstrate expenditures on health R&D by both performer and funder from 1989 to 2006 preliminary estimates. Historical data indicates that in Canada, health R&D expenditures as a percentage of Gross Domestic Expenditures on Research and Development (GERD) are growing.
Release date: 2007-03-30 - 2,334. Work hours instability ArchivedArticles and reports: 75-001-X20061129544Geography: CanadaDescription:
Discussions related to work hours are typically driven by cross-sectional studies. Much less is known about the longitudinal perspective and the persistence of long hours or periods of underemployment. The annual hours of employees are examined over a five-year period to determine what proportion experience variable work years and how their well-being is affected.

The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the major theoretical and methodological concepts involved in mediated effects analysis, as well as present some illustrative applications using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) and data from the 2003 Canadian Health Services Access Survey (HSAS).
Release date: 2007-03-02 - 2,336. Estimating undercounting of vehicle-related injury cases in New Zealand: a probabilistic data integration and capture-recapture approach ArchivedArticles and reports: 11-522-X20050019477Description:
Using probabilistic data linkage, an integrated database of injuries is obtained by linking on some subset of various key variables or their derivatives: names (given names, surnames and alternative names), age, sex, birthdate, phone numbers, injury date, unique identification numbers, diagnosis. To assess the quality of the links produced, false positive rates and false negative rates are computed. These rates however do not give an indication of whether the databases used for linking have undercounted injuries (bias). It is of interest to an injury researcher moreover, to have some idea of the error margin for the figures generated from integrating various injury databases, similar to what one would get in a survey for instance.
Release date: 2007-03-02 - 2,337. Health studies using linked administrative hospital data ArchivedArticles and reports: 11-522-X20050019482Description:
Health studies linking the administrative hospital discharge database by person can be used to describe disease/procedure rates and trends by person, place and time; investigate outcomes of disease, procedures or risk factors; and illuminate hospital utilization. The power and challenges of this work will be illustrated with examples from work done at Statistics Canada.
Release date: 2007-03-02 - Articles and reports: 11-522-X20050019490Description:

Release date: 2007-03-02 - Articles and reports: 11-522-X20050019492Description:
Although it is preferable to calculate population health indicators such as life expectancies in different health states based on health data from longitudinal surveys, they are almost always calculated using health data from cross-section surveys. One way of overcoming this challenge is to use health information collected retrospectively. This study is based on two major propositions. The first proposition is that population health indicators can be calculated using data with retrospective information on health. The second proposition is that estimates calculated based on such data would closely approximate estimates calculated based on data with current health information.
Release date: 2007-03-02 - 2,340. Educational services and the disabled child ArchivedArticles and reports: 81-004-X20060059588Description:
Today, disability is viewed more often as a social construct than a medical one. Educational reforms have changed the way in which children with disabilities are integrated into the school system. With data from the 2001 Participation and Activity Limitation Survey, this article looks at the prevalence of children with disabilities, whether they attend regular classes and the kind of conditions for which they need special services. It examines the issues about access to educational services needed : which services are most needed and used, and what barriers may get in the way of obtaining such services.

Using data from the 2017, 2018, and 2021 Canadian Community Health Survey, the objective of this study was to compare recreational screen time behaviours before (2018) and during (2021) the pandemic, looking at patterns by sociodemographic subgroups of the Canadian population.Release date: 2024-05-15
- Articles and reports: 82-003-X202400500002Description: The availability of measures to operationalize allostatic load—the cumulative toll on the body of responding to stressor demands—in population health surveys may differ across years or surveys, hampering analyses on the entire sampled population. In this study, the impacts of variable selection and calculation method were evaluated to generate an allostatic load index applicable across all cycles of the Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS). CHMS data were used to compare individual and population-level changes in scores for allostatic load indexes in which other commonly used measures were substituted for waist-to-hip ratio. Associations between the various constructs and indicators of socioeconomic position were then assessed to evaluate whether relationships were maintained across indexes.Release date: 2024-05-15

Release date: 2014-02-05 - Surveys and statistical programs – Documentation: 82-619-M2012004Geography: CanadaDescription:
Mental illnesses largely involve alterations in mood, thinking, and behaviour, as well as other domains of mental functioning, and affect almost all Canadians in some way, either directly or indirectly. They routinely cause significant impairments in emotional functioning, which may lead to social or physical limitations. In some cases, such as in agoraphobia, individuals cannot even leave their homes due to intense anxiety; depression can cause an individual to lose all interest in life. This document describes the mental illnesses that have the greatest impact on Canadians in terms of prevalence or severity of disability, and how they affect the health status of Canadians.

Release date: 2008-09-16 - 17. The General Social Survey: New Data Overview ArchivedSurveys and statistical programs – Documentation: 89-631-XDescription:
This report highlights the latest developments and rationale behind recent cycles of the General Social Survey (GSS). Starting with an overview of the GSS mandate and historic cycle topics, we then focus on two recent cycles related to families in Canada: Family Transitions (2006) and Family, Social Support and Retirement (2007). Finally, we give a summary of what is to come in the 2008 GSS on Social Networks, and describe a special project to mark 'Twenty Years of GSS'.
The survey collects data over a twelve month period from the population living in private households in the 10 provinces. For all cycles except Cycles 16 and 21, the population aged 15 and older has been sampled. Cycles 16 and 21 sampled persons aged 45 and older.
Cycle 20 (GSS 2006) is the fourth cycle of the GSS to collect data on families (the first three cycles on the family were in 1990, 1995 and 2001). Cycle 20 covers much the same content as previous cycles on families with some sections revised and expanded. The data enable analysts to measure conjugal and fertility history (chronology of marriages, common-law unions, and children), family origins, children's home leaving, fertility intentions, child custody as well as work history and other socioeconomic characteristics. Questions on financial support agreements or arrangements (for children and the ex-spouse or ex-partner) for separated and divorced families have been modified. Also, sections on social networks, well-being and housing characteristics have been added.
