The paper examines the contribution of the household sector to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Canada, through its use of private motor vehicles. Emissions estimates are presented at national, provincial and census metropolitan area (CMA) levels. The study uses data from the Canadian Vehicle Survey (CVS), conducted by Statistics Canada's Transportation Division and the Material and Energy Flow Accounts (MEFA) from Environment Accounts and Energy Statistics Division (EASD).

At the national level the study presents estimates of vehicle emissions, GHG intensity, as well as per capita emissions. Total and per capita emissions by income group are also presented at the national level. At the provincial and CMA levels, the study presents the first survey based estimates of total and per capita vehicle emissions. It also explores the regional differences and examines the contributing factors.

Settlements are important hubs for residential, commercial and industrial activity, however, the size, structure and form of settlements over time can have a variety of social, economic and environmental implications. Statistics Canada has developed a new concept and dataset to delineate or map boundaries for Canada's settlements. This article presents some of the early geographic results of this project.

Energy use is one of the primary contributors to environmental degradation and climate change. This article provides a profile of the Canadian manufacturing industry and the investments made in energy-related processes and technologies in 2006. These investments either reduced the amount of energy used for a process, or lowered the amount of greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants produced through the production and use of energy.

Description: Households in Canadian municipalities often have options when choosing the type of water they drink at home and whether they treat it prior to drinking it. The reasons why they might choose to treat their water could be aesthetic or there might have been problems in the past that are influencing their decisions today. Using data from the 2007 Households and the Environment Survey, the author explores some of the factors governing these decisions for households in a selection of Canadian municipalities.

Description: Remote Sensing and Geospatial Analysis (RSGA) of the Agriculture Division prepared a series of maps and statistics that show the progression of the 2009 Red River valley flood in Manitoba for the spring of 2009. Starting with an image acquired on March 31, the maps were produced from the analysis of Radarsat-2 satellite image data integrated with 2006 Census of Agriculture data and census geography boundary files. From this analysis, the total area of flooded agriculture land and the number of farmers affected were calculated. A comparison is made with the 1997 flood that occurred in the same region.

Tracking water yield—an estimate of renewable water supply derived from National Water Data Archive (HYDAT) streamflow data—provides information to help understand water resources available for human use and ecosystem needs. Annual datasets are available for the years 1971 to 2021 and cover southern Canada. Thirty-year averages are available for 1971-2000, 1981-2010, and 1991-2020. They cover the terrestrial and freshwater extent of Canada, except for the Arctic Archipelago.

Description: This product contains contiguously settled area (CSA) boundaries for a subset of Canadian population centres for 2010 and 2020 with user documentation. The CSA boundaries are derived from land cover data and represent the geographic extent of settled areas based on their physical footprint on the landscape. The boundaries can be used for reference, mapping and spatial analysis of settled areas and urban ecosystems. The CSA boundaries are created and maintained under the umbrella of the Census of Environment, and will support Statistics Canada's ecosystem accounting efforts.

The Ecological Land Classification (ELC) is Statistics Canada's official classification for ecological areas in Canada.

The ELC was developed to enable the production of integrated statistics for ecological areas. It is a hierarchical framework that classifies ecological areas or ecosystems and that incorporates all major components of ecosystems: air, water land and biota. All boundaries in the ecological framework are matched to soil landscape polygons from the Soil Landscapes of Canada (SLC).

There are 15 ecozones at the top of the ecological land classification hierarchy. They cover the entire terrestrial extent of Canada.

These ecozones are subdivided into 53 ecoprovinces that contain 194 ecoregions, which can be further subdivided into 1,027 separate ecological units called ecodistricts.

Description: The Methodological Guide: Canadian System of Environmental-Economic Accounting provides readers with information on environmental-economic accounts at Statistics Canada. It provides links to produced data and publications and describes the concepts, sources, and methods used to compile them. Topics include ecosystem accounting, asset accounts (natural resources in physical and monetary terms), physical flow accounts (energy and water use, and waste and greenhouse gas emissions), environmental activity statistics (expenditures on environmental protection), and the applications and extensions of those accounts (attribution of physical flows to final demand and intensity measures).

This user's guide has been developed by the Environmental Statistics Program to facilitate access to environmental-economic accounting information throughout Statistics Canada and to explain its linkage with international standards, the United Nations System of Environmental-Economic Accounting. This guide is continually being updated to maintain its relevance.
