    Description: Previous research has found variability in cancer incidence and cancer-related outcomes according to place of residence. This study examined geographic variability in the incidence and mortality of breast cancer among females in Canada, using data from the 2021 Canadian Cancer Registry (breast cancer incidence) and the Canadian Vital Statistics – Death database (breast cancer mortality). Age-standardized incidence rates (ASIRs) and age-standardized mortality rates (ASMRs) per 100,000 females per year and their rate ratios were calculated, as well as age group-specific and age-standardized stage-specific incidence rates, and examined across provinces and territories, community sizes, and peer groups (i.e., clusters of health regions with similar socioeconomic and demographic characteristics).

    Description: Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in Canada. Breast density substantially influences breast cancer risk and mammography performance. However, OncoSim-Breast, a Canadian microsimulation model representing breast cancer control, including cancer onset, screening, and survival, has not previously explicitly accounted for breast density. This study describes the incorporation of density-specific parameters—prevalence, relative risk of breast cancer, and digital mammography performance (sensitivity and specificity)—using data from five Canadian provinces, into the OncoSim-Breast model. Calibration experiments and internal validations were conducted to ensure the updated OncoSim-Breast model aligned with observed data from the Canadian Cancer Registry.

    Description: Body mass index (BMI) is commonly used to estimate obesity prevalence; however, reliance on BMI alone can lead to an incomplete understanding of obesity’s impact on health. In line with the 2025 recommendations of the Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology Commission, this study used measured and self-reported data from the 2016 to 2019 Canadian Health Measures Survey to combine population-level measures of excess adiposity with indicators of physiological dysfunction and activity limitation across eight body system domains. Clinical and preclinical obesity were characterized by excess adiposity and progressive obesity-related impairment among Canadian adults.

    Description: This dashboard presents selected data that are relevant for monitoring the impacts of COVID-19 on economic activity in Canada. It includes data on a range of monthly indicators—real GDP, consumer prices, the unemployment rate, merchandise exports and imports, retail sales, hours worked and manufacturing sales—as well as monthly data on aircraft movements, railway carloadings, and travel between Canada and other countries.

    Estimates are presented from January 2019 to the current reference month for each data series. The information will be updated continuously as new data becomes available, and additional series may be added to the dashboard as circumstances warrant.

    To support the analysis of time series movements in the data, the dashboard reports changes in each series on both a month-over-month and year-over-year basis. For most of the variables reported, information on cumulative changes in the data both prior and subsequent to the end of 2019 is also presented by indexing the level estimates to December 2019, as depicted in the accompanying charts.

    Description: Reliance on the use of opioids to manage pain has increased over time, as have opioid-related morbidity and deaths. In 2019, Statistics Canada reported descriptive associations between demographic and geographic descriptors, certain mental health disorders, and problematic opioid pain relief medications (OPRM) use among Canada’s OPRM-using population aged 15 years or older. The goal of this analysis is to extend that previous research by using modelling to examine the associations for a broader range of characteristics. It strives to clarify which socioeconomic, health behaviour and psychosocial factors are independently and significantly associated with a greater likelihood of problematic OPRM use after accounting for other descriptors.

    This study is the first comprehensive evaluation of progress in cancer survival for all cancer types combined in Canada. The results span the complete time period of the Canadian Cancer Registry and are unaffected by changes in the age, sex and case-mix of cancers over this time. Specifically, predicted Canadian net cancer survival index (CSI) estimates for the three-year period from 2015 to 2017 are presented and compared with corresponding actual estimates dating as far back as the 1992-to-1994 period. Comparisons are made for both sexes combined and for males and females separately. Further insight is provided by the determination of the most influential cancer and sex combinations and the leading cancer types within each sex, in regard to changes in the CSI since the periods of 1992 to 1994 and 2005 to 2007.

The objective of this study was to assess cancer incidence and mortality rates by ethnicity in Canada. The study used the 2006 Canadian Census Health and Environment Cohort, linked to the Canadian Cancer Registry and the Canadian Vital Statistics-Death Database, to determine cancer cases and mortality from 2006 to 2016. Ethnicity was categorized as non-Indigenous North American (NINA); European; Caribbean; Latin, Central and South American (LCSA); African; East Asian; South Asian; and West Central Asian and Middle Eastern.
