Description: These indexes are calculated to establish and adjust the Post Living Allowance (PLA) paid to Canadian government employees serving outside of Canada. They are comparative measurements that numerically express the difference between the retail prices of a representative basket of goods and services at a foreign location with prices for a similar basket of goods and services in Ottawa.

Two separate reports are provided to reflect the specific terms and conditions of service for these personnel. A description of each report is provided below.

Foreign Service Directives Post Indexes: These indexes are calculated for personnel serving under the terms and conditions of the Foreign Service Directives (FSDs).

Canadian Forces Post Indexes: These indexes are calculated for Canadian Forces members serving under either the terms and conditions of the Military Foreign Service Instructions (MFSIs) or the Foreign Service Directives (FSDs). These personnel may be provided with supplies or allowances by the Department of National Defence or the United Nations. The indexes in this listing are not appropriate for use by non-military personnel.

Description: In collaboration with the Bank of Canada, this research paper extends previous work on alternative approaches to measuring owned accommodation (OA) in the Canadian Consumer Price Index (CPI), with a particular focus on rental equivalence (RE). The analysis constructs analytical price index series for Canada using the main OA measurement concepts proposed in the International Consumer Price Index Manual and widely adopted internationally. The study examines how OA and the all-items CPI may have evolved from 2004 to 2025 under different methodologies. The inclusion of asking-rent–based RE measures aims to better capture secondary rental market dynamics and provide more timely insights into how rent movements affect OA and the all-items CPI.

The Agricultural Ecumene Boundary File delineates areas of significant agricultural activity in Canada. This product is generalized for small-scale mapping and can be used to clip or intersect with any geographic boundary file, administrative or natural, to limit the data display to those areas where agricultural activity is concentrated in Canada. When used in dot density and choropleth thematic maps, the ecumene concept provides a more accurate depiction of the spatial distribution of data within geographic areas.
