11. Understanding mortality differentials of Black adults in Canada

Description: Prior analyses using national population-based cohorts such as the Canadian Census Health and Environment Cohorts identified elevated mortality risks among Black adults, compared with White adults in Canada. These mortality risks, such as those from HIV/AIDS, prostate cancer, diabetes, cerebrovascular diseases, and various cancers, were differentially higher among Black adults despite accounting for social determinants of health. This study seeks to delve deeper in understanding the paths that contribute to the differential mortality patterns observed in the previous study, particularly for the outcomes that showed substantial increased risk for both Black males and females.

Description: During the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada, there was a decrease in population positive mental health (PMH); however, many individuals still reported high levels of PMH. One potential protective factor could be a sense of control, which involves perceptions of personal mastery and minimal perceived constraints. Limited Canadian research has been conducted on the link between sense of control and PMH during the pandemic. This study examined the association between facets of sense of control (i.e., personal mastery and perceived constraints) and three positive mental health outcomes (i.e., high self-rated mental health, strong community belonging, and life satisfaction) during the pandemic among adults in Canada.

Description: While a large body of research has identified several correlates of employee turnover, little is currently known regarding the degree to which employees who work in community care facilities for the elderly leave the nursing and residential care facilities subsector or the health care and social assistance sector in a given year. Sample size limitations restricted the focus of the study to women, who represent the vast majority of employees who work in seniors’ homes.

Description: Compared with their cisgender heterosexual peers, youth who are Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer and those who use other terms related to gender or sexual diversity (2SLGBTQ+) are at elevated risk for mental health difficulties and suicidality. The social experiences of 2SLGBTQ+ youth, including the impact of minority stress, access to social support, and experiences of negative social interactions, may contribute to this disparity. The purpose of this study is to describe the mental health and service use of 2SLGBTQ+ youth compared with those of their cisgender heterosexual peers and (2) examine the role of young people’s social support and negative social interactions in explaining mental health inequities between 2SLGBTQ+ youth and their peers.
