- Table: 95F0359X2001001Description:
This table shows 2001 Census data for the following levels of geography: Canada, provinces, territories, census divisions, census subdivisions and dissemination areas.
This table is part of the topic "Immigration and Citizenship," which shows 2001 Census data on immigration and citizenship trends in Canada. Information is provided on Canada's immigrant population: its size, its geographic distribution, its origins and its demographic characteristics. Similar information is available for the Canadian-born population and non-permanent residents. Citizenship information from the census shows, for example, the number of immigrants who have acquired Canadian citizenship and the number of Canadians who hold dual citizenship.
Data on the socio-economic characteristics of these populations will be available at a later date.
The following concepts related to immigration and citizenship are available from the 2001 Census: (1) birthplace of respondent (including province or territory of birth), (2) country of citizenship, (3) immigrant status, (4) period or year of immigration, and (5) age at immigration. In addition, for the first time since the 1971 Census, the Census asked a question on the birthplace of parents. Responses to this question can be used to assess the socio-economic conditions of second-generation Canadians (that is, the Canadian-born children of foreign-born parents).
It is possible to subscribe to all the day-of-release bundles. Refer to Catalogue No. 97F0023XCB for more information.

It also examines the possible impact of COVID-19 on the most recent trend in citizenship rates.Release date: 2024-02-28
- Articles and reports: 36-28-0001202400200003Description: Given the large differences in educational attainment observed across non-Indigenous population groups in Canada, understanding when these differences emerge and what may explain them is an important first step in informing policy discussions on the issue. Using the British Columbia kindergarten to Grade 12 dataset, the Postsecondary Student Information System, the 2016 Census of Population, and the T1 Family File tax data, this study follows several cohorts of Grade 9 students in British Columbia over time to explore differences between population groups, by gender, in the probability and timing of high school graduation and enrolment in academic postsecondary programs.Release date: 2024-02-28
- Articles and reports: 82-003-X202400200001Description: The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted several issues among health care workers in Canada’s long-term care and seniors’ (LTCS) homes, including labour shortages, staff retention difficulties, overcrowding, and precarious working conditions. There is currently a lack of information on the health, well-being, and working conditions of health care workers in LTCS homes—many of them immigrants—and a limited understanding of the relationship between them. Using data from the 2021 Survey on Health Care Workers’ Experiences During the Pandemic, this paper examines differences between immigrant and non-immigrant workers’ health outcomes and precarious working conditions during the pandemic.Release date: 2024-02-21

- Articles and reports: 36-28-0001202400100001Description: In recent years, foreign workers have become an important source of labour in the accommodation and food services industry in Canada. This study examines the characteristics of temporary foreign workers with lower-skill occupations who had their first Canadian employment in the accommodation and food services industry from 2000 to 2020, as well as their cumulative rates of transition to permanent residency and retention in that industry. This study also compares these outcomes with those of temporary foreign workers with higher-skill occupations and study permit holders employed in the industry.Release date: 2024-01-24
- Articles and reports: 36-28-0001202400100003Description: In 2013, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada introduced a new refugee resettlement category called the Blended Visa Office-Referred Program. This admission stream combined the core principles of IRCC’s Government-Assisted Refugees program and the Private Sponsorship of Refugees program. This study asks two questions. First, what are the economic outcomes of BVOR refugees who have been admitted to Canada since 2013? Second, how do these outcomes compare with those of other resettled refugees who were admitted through the GAR and Private Sponsorship of Refugees programs?Release date: 2024-01-24
