Who is reaching out for help? Examining access to mental health and substance use health supports among girls and young women in Canada

The mental health of youth in Canada has been an increasing concern in recent years, with increases in the prevalence of mood and anxiety disorders among those aged 12 to 24 between 2011 and 2018, particularly among adolescent females. However, trends are not as clear with respect to substance use—binge drinking has decreased for young males, while the use of cannabis and illicit drugs has generally remained stable among this population. These findings broadly align with trends for the general population of Canada between 2012 and 2022.

Health and care-receiving profiles and unmet home care needs among community-dwelling Canadians aged 85 years and older

Among the older population, those aged 85 and older, sometimes referred to as the “oldest old”1 is one of the fastest-growing age groups. In 2023, there were 896,600 Canadians aged 85 and older, comprising 2.2% of the population, an increase of 16.3% from 2016, mostly driven by increasing life expectancy, improved screening, and treatment advances. The population aged 85 and older is projected to reach 2.2 million by 2043 under a medium-growth scenario, and could triple by 2073, reaching between 3.3 million (low-growth scenario) and 4.3 million (high-growth scenario). The increase in the population aged 85 and older will be particularly rapid from 2031 to 2050, when the large baby boom cohort will reach this age group. Societal implications of the increasing number of oldest-old Canadians include higher need for caregiving and support services for long-term care, health care, and home care.
