    The Aboriginal Peoples Survey (APS) is a national survey on the social and economic conditions of Aboriginal Peoples (First Nations people living off reserve, Métis and Inuit) aged 6 years and over. The 2012 APS represents the fourth cycle of the survey and focuses on issues of education, employment and health.

    A comparatively young and growing population, Métis represent an emerging force within the Canadian labour market. Comparisons within the Labour Force Survey reveal that Métis have labour market characteristics that closely resemble those of the total population in Canada. This study profiles the labour market characteristics of Métis aged 15 years and over using the 2012 Aboriginal Peoples Survey. Employment, unemployment and additional factors such as occupation, job tenure and job permanence were considered.

    The article "The Education and Employment Experiences of First Nations People Living Off Reserve, Inuit, and Métis: Selected Findings from the 2012 Aboriginal Peoples Survey" describes education pathways, education experiences and current employment of adults aged 18 to 44 who were not attending high school at the time of data collection. It includes analyses of personal, family and school-related experiences during the last year of school, postsecondary education profiles and selected characteristics of workers, the unemployed and those not in the labour force. As well, the article addresses the subject of barriers to further education or training.

    This report provides an overview of the labour market outcomes of Aboriginal people during and after the labour market downturn. It covers the period of 2008 to 2010, using annual averages by several demographic and labour market activity indicators available from the Labour Force Survey (LFS). It is divided by age group, as well as, when possible, by the Aboriginal identity groups: First Nations people living off-reserve and Métis. The Inuit population are included in the Aboriginal total but not separately as most estimates for this group were not reliable. The report also distinguishes Aboriginal labour market outcomes by gender, province or region and job characteristics such as industry, occupation, hours worked and highest level of education attained.

These estimates are based on the year 2007 and cover Aboriginal people living off-reserve in the ten provinces. This report examines the labour force characteristics of the Aboriginal people, namely the employment and unemployment rates as well as wages by Aboriginal identity. The report further looks at the estimates by non-Aboriginal as well as Aboriginal, North American Indian and Métis populations. Also included is limited analysis on the Inuit population using the 2006 Census results, since the LFS sample size was too small for this group. Data are presented for the following characteristics: age, sex, educational attainment, province or region and industry. Finally, trend analysis is provided for the four western provinces over a four year period. The previously released report (Catalogue no. 71-587-X) provided analysis for the western provinces from April 2004 to March 2005.

It is based on the Micro-Economic Monitor Special Report: "Aboriginal Entrepreneurs in Canada - Progress & Prospects", a collaboration between the Department's Micro-Economic Policy Analysis Branch and Aboriginal Business Canada program. The Report combined findings from two Statistics Canada sources: the 1996 Census of Population and the 1996 Aboriginal Business Survey (ABS). The ABS was administered to a sample of some 2,500 Aboriginal business owners from across Canada.

How do I use the filters and the search box?

  • You can initiate a search by entering keywords or selecting filters (e.g., under Subject, Geography, etc.) on the left side of the page.

  • Filters can be used together or in any combination. Each time you select a filter, the results on the page are updated.

  • To start a new search, click on the Clear all button above the search box or deselect each filter.

  • Specified keywords and filters appear above the search box. You can deselect any or all the tags to refine or clear your search.

How do I refine my search?

  • You can enter keywords in the search box. It is not necessary to use “+” or “, “ or “AND”.

  • You can delete some or all of the keywords from your search string.

  • Quotes around keywords limit the search to a specific phrase.

    • For example, “labour force survey” will limit results to products containing this phrase.

  • Use “or” between keywords to obtain results that contain one or more search terms.
