Various factors are also associated with this population's well-being, such as social life, economic situation and health; we will therefore explore social networks and subjective well-being, volunteering, and the most recent trends in the labour force participation and income of senior women. The Female Population chapter of Women in Canada presents the socio-demographic and ethno-cultural characteristics of women and girls living in this country. Understanding the current trends related to an aging, and an increasingly diverse female population, can help inform policy and planning. Topics examined in this chapter include the distribution of the female population across the provinces and territories and across age, and the share with an Aboriginal identity. In addition, aspects of diversity within the female population, including immigrant status and visible minority status, will be presented as well as residential mobility, language-related characteristics, and religious affiliation and religiosity. Where appropriate, trends over time will be analyzed and comparisons will be drawn with the male population in order to highlight existing similarities and differences.

This Juristat article provides and overview of the caseload and characteristics of adults admitted to and released from correctional services in 2008/2009, and shows trends in these data from 2004/2005. The article uses data from the Adult Correctional Services (ACS) Survey and the Integrated Correctional Services Survey (ICSS), and includes analysis of the number of admissions to provincial and territorial, and federal custody (sentenced custody, remand and other temporary detention) and to community supervision (probation, conditional sentences, statutory release and parole supervision). These data are examined based on key characteristics such as age, sex, Aboriginal identity, most serious offence and length of time served. An analysis of other characteristics, such as marital status, employment and education levels, is provided for adults in custody in the jurisdictions that provided detailed data (i.e., Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario, Saskatchewan, and Correctional Service of Canada). Furthermore, a ten-year trend in the cost of correctional services is provided along with the number of correctional institutions operating in Canada.

Most Canadians retire by the age of 65. Some, however, continue to work well into their senior years. This article uses census data to study labour market activity among senior men and women. Trends in seniors employment rates and occupational and industrial profiles are outlined. In addition, 2006 data are used to study factors associated with employment and work intensity.

Women have made substantial gains in education over the last few decades and are now more likely to have a university degree than men. At the same time, the conjugal situation of female university graduates has changed considerably. Using data from the 1981 to 2006 Censuses, this article examines how the propensity to form unions (marriage or common-law) has changed for women with university degrees compared to those without a university education. It also compares the incidence of female university graduates forming unions with similarly educated males over time.

This study analyses data from the 2006 Aboriginal Children's Survey to identify some of the characteristics associated with the ability to understand an Aboriginal language among off-reserve First Nations children aged 2 to 5. More specifically, it examines the extent to which the home, the extended family, child care settings, and the broader community can contribute to the transmission of Aboriginal languages to young First Nations children living off reserve.

Homeownership affects investment, consumption, and savings decisions of households, and plays a major role in post-retirement well-being. This paper examines two questions. First, to what extent do Canadians acquire and retain homeownership at different life-course stages, particularly after retirement? Second, has the age profile of homeownership changed over generations?

Using data from eight Canadian censuses of population, conducted between 1971 and 2006, we find a strong regularity in the age profile of homeownership across generations of Canadians. The homeownership rate rises quickly with the age of household maintainers (i.e., the person(s) who pay(s) for shelter costs) in the period before the age of 40, and continues to climb thereafter at a slower pace until reaching the plateau near age 65, when about three quarters of Canadian households own their homes. We find that the homeownership rate changes little from age 65 to 74 but starts declining after age 75. As well, we note that the level at which homeownership plateaus has risen steadily across birth cohorts since the 1970s.

New this year in the Internet version is a phased release approach. The continued effort to include supplemental plain language definitions for certain variables, without census or Statistics Canada jargon, will help users better understand the meaning of the definitions and the periodic updates.

Statistics Canada has developed the 2006 Census Teacher's Kit for use in elementary, intermediate, secondary and adult classes across the country. Students play an important role as future respondents to the census. Some students may help parents complete their household's questionnaire if their language skills in English or French are stronger than those of the parents.

The Teacher's Kit contains eight teacher-ready activities as well as a guide to provide:

- an explanation of why Canada conducts a census and how census results benefit society

- an introduction to census data as an information source for school papers and projects - an alternative approach to studying math, geography, English, French and social sciences

The activities have been prepared with the help of a professional educator and have been classroom tested in English and French for suitable content and grade level. They are appropriate for English, math, theatre arts, art, social sciences, geography, history, family studies and physical education. Suggested grade levels are indicated on each activity and all necessary tables, charts, graphs and data are included. A teacher requires one kit; photocopying is required for student handout sheets.

This report describes changes planned for the 2006 Census education questions. Education questions are a part of the Form 2B (the long form) of the census. This form is completed by 20% of all households. These changes were tested in the May 2004 Census test of over 300,000 households. The changes aim to address data limitations in the 2001 Census questions and to enhance their relevance to education studies by allowing a better reflection of the range of educational pathways taken by Canadians. The report includes an explanation of the reasons for modifying the 2006 Census education content, a detailed look at each of the changes, and a discussion on historical consistency.

This report describes the comments received as a result of the second round of the 2006 Census consultations. As with the previous 2006 Census consultation, this second round of consultations integrated discussions on the dissemination program, questionnaire content and census geography. However, the focus of this second round of consultations was placed on the 2001 Census of Population dissemination program and proposed directions for 2006 geography. Consultations were held from January to June 2004. Approximately 1,000 comments were captured through written submissions and the organization of over 40 meetings across Canada.

This report describes users' feedback on dissemination and geography issues received through this second round of consultations. In addition to user's comments, web metrics information serves as a valuable tool when evaluating the accessibility of public good data tables. Therefore, page view counts have been integrated in this report.

Some general planning assumptions that focus on the production and dissemination of 2006 Census products are also included in this report.
