Release date: 2000-12-11 - Journals and periodicals: 72F0020XGeography: CanadaDescription:
This research paper summarizes the approach, methodology and results of a study of the labour market behaviour of persons in various categories of attachment to the labour market. The analysis focuses on the transition probabilities for various categories of labour market attachment. Specifically, the study will include a discussion of the behavioural differences of the following groups:
a) a comparison of transitions from U (unemployed), M (marginally attached - wants work) and N (not attached - does not want work); b) a further breakdown of the transitions from U by active searchers, passive searchers, those on temporary layoff and short-term future starts; c) a further breakdown of transitions for M by reason for not searching; and d) a further breakdown of transitions from N by long-term future starts and other.
The study will be based on 1997-1999 Labour Force Survey data.

- 281. Inside the labour market downturn ArchivedArticles and reports: 75-001-X201100111410Geography: CanadaDescription:
The Canadian labour market recently experienced its most significant downturn since the 1990 - 1992 recession. Although employment rebounded more quickly than during the downturns of the early 1980s and early 1990s, the number of individuals without a job remains significantly higher than at the beginning of the downturn. This article investigates how various categories of non-workers grew in the past two years. It also discusses alternative measures of unemployment that include some of these categories in the calculations. Several of the alternative measures also include part-time workers who would prefer to work full time.

It also examines the earnings gap between temporary and permanent positions and looks at whether that gap changed during the recent employment slowdown.
Release date: 2010-12-20 - 285. Why has the gender wage gap narrowed? ArchivedArticles and reports: 75-001-X201100111394Geography: CanadaDescription:
The gender gap in hourly wages narrowed between the late 1980s and the late 2000s. This article analyses the narrowing wage gap according to the changing characteristics of men and women in paid work, the changes in pay received for those characteristics, and the extent to which who works in each period affects the results.
Release date: 2010-12-20 - Articles and reports: 81-004-X201000411339Description:
Based on data from the Labour Force Survey, this article examines trends in high school dropout rates over the 1990/1991 to 2009/2010 period. The high school dropout rate is defined as the share of 20 to 24 year-olds who are not attending school and who have not graduated from high school. In addition, national data for both Aboriginal people and immigrants are now available from the Labour Force Survey, allowing researchers to assess how dropout rates differ between these groups and the rest of the population. Finally, the article also examines trends in labour market outcomes of dropouts in terms of unemployment rates and median weekly earnings.
Release date: 2010-11-03 - 287. A Note on High School Graduation and School Attendance, by Age and Province, 2009/2010 ArchivedArticles and reports: 81-004-X201000411360Description:
Differences across provinces in the 'typical' age at which students graduate from high school result in an apparent paradox: in some provinces, high school graduation rates and high school dropout rates both are low, while in others, both rates are high. This article addresses this apparent paradox, using data from the Labour Force Survey for 2009/2010. It examines high school status, by age group for 16 to 24 year olds, for Canada and the provinces, showing how the share of graduates, continuers and dropouts changes as students age.
