It examines poverty rates and employment income of transgender men, transgender women and non-binary people, compared with cisgender men. Description: There is a growing trend in the prevalence of activity limitations among both certified journeypersons and non-journeypersons between 2016 and 2021, with certified journeypersons experiencing this increase at a faster rate. In the context of the skilled trades, activity limitations can pose as a barrier for prospective journeypersons, and the possibility of worsening their condition can also pose as a motivating factor for them to leave an apprenticeship program and/or quit the skilled trades altogether. These points are of particular interest given the various reports on the incoming labour shortages in the skilled trades and the need to attract and retain journeypersons in the field to meet future demands.

Description: Renters’ shelter costs can vary substantially by duration of tenancy. Renters who recently moved into their dwelling can pay substantially more than longstanding renters. This tenure-based discrepancy in rents paid can have important implications in terms of affordability and residential mobility. This study sheds light on trends in shelter cost differences by duration of tenancy from 1996 to 2021, and how this gap in rental costs between recent renters and longer-term renters varies across municipalities and neighbourhoods.

Description: The Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) has admitted more immigrants than any other individual economic immigration program in most years since the mid-2010s. This article examines the occupational outcomes of recent provincial nominees (PNs) who obtained permanent residence in Canada one to five years prior to the 2021 Census. This is the fifth article in a series focusing on the PNP. It contributes to the series by examining several questions related to the occupational outcomes of PNs.

Description: This paper draws a portrait of the economic situation of older persons (aged 65 years and older) in Canada, with a special focus on different groups of older women. More specifically, using the combined data from the Survey of Consumer Finances, the Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics, and the Canadian Income Survey, the evolution of the low-income situations, median income, and sources of income of older women and men from 1976 to 2022 are studied in the first section of the paper. Using the 2021 Census of Population, the second section looks specifically at the low-income and poverty rates of different groups of older women, including older immigrant and racialized women.

Description: Previous studies of earnings differences across groups of Canadian-born individuals have used cross-sectional data, leaving unanswered the important question of what earnings differences amount to when measured over workers’ lifecycle. Using data from Statistics Canada’s Longitudinal Worker File and the 1996 and 2001 censuses of population, this study fills this gap and quantifies differences in cumulative earnings—the sum of earnings received over a 20-year period—for four different groups of Canadian-born individuals.

Description: The focus of this portrait is the analysis of the sociodemographic, linguistic, ethnocultural, and religious diversity of the Black populations in Canada. Using Census of Population data (1996 to 2021) and data from the 2011 National Household Survey, the paper explores the evolution of the Black populations in Canada and their composition in 2021. An intersectional perspective is used to explore the interactions between multiple diversity measures. By examining the main characteristics of the Black populations born in Canada, the Caribbean and Africa, this analytical portrait demonstrates that there is not one, but many diverse Black populations in Canada.

Description: Amid growing concerns in Canada over housing affordability, questions have arisen about non-permanent residents’ experience in the Canadian rental market. This study uses data from the 2021 Census of Population to examine whether international students and temporary foreign workers face higher rental costs than the Canadian-born population (non-immigrants) and longer-term immigrants (those who were admitted more than five years preceding the census year). It also explores the factors contributing to disparities in rental expenses among these groups.

The 2006 Census Dictionary provides detailed information on every aspect of the Census of Population and Census of Agriculture along with an overview of each phase of the census, from content determination to data dissemination with focus on the changes from 2001. As well, it provides detailed definitions of the Census of Population concepts, universes, variables and geographic terms, including historical information to facilitate the comparison of variables between census years.

New this year in the Internet version is a phased release approach. The continued effort to include supplemental plain language definitions for certain variables, without census or Statistics Canada jargon, will help users better understand the meaning of the definitions and the periodic updates.

The Preview of Products and Services offers a complete overview of the proposed products and services that will be released based on the 2006 Census of Population and 2006 Census of Agriculture results. Information (where applicable) will include major characteristics and content, "What's new?" in comparison to 2001, levels of geography, availability/delivery methods, release timeframe and pricing.

The preview is now exclusively an Internet product for 2006 and is no longer available in a formalized print format (i.e. newsletter publication); however, "print-friendly" format is available via the Internet. This product will be updated periodically as details regarding products and services become finalized.

Description:

Statistics Canada has developed the 2006 Census Teacher's Kit for use in elementary, intermediate, secondary and adult classes across the country. Students play an important role as future respondents to the census. Some students may help parents complete their household's questionnaire if their language skills in English or French are stronger than those of the parents.

The Teacher's Kit contains eight teacher-ready activities as well as a guide to provide:

- an explanation of why Canada conducts a census and how census results benefit society

- an introduction to census data as an information source for school papers and projects - an alternative approach to studying math, geography, English, French and social sciences

The activities have been prepared with the help of a professional educator and have been classroom tested in English and French for suitable content and grade level. They are appropriate for English, math, theatre arts, art, social sciences, geography, history, family studies and physical education. Suggested grade levels are indicated on each activity and all necessary tables, charts, graphs and data are included. A teacher requires one kit; photocopying is required for student handout sheets.

This report describes changes planned for the 2006 Census education questions. Education questions are a part of the Form 2B (the long form) of the census. This form is completed by 20% of all households. These changes were tested in the May 2004 Census test of over 300,000 households. The changes aim to address data limitations in the 2001 Census questions and to enhance their relevance to education studies by allowing a better reflection of the range of educational pathways taken by Canadians. The report includes an explanation of the reasons for modifying the 2006 Census education content, a detailed look at each of the changes, and a discussion on historical consistency.

This report describes the comments received as a result of the second round of the 2006 Census consultations. As with the previous 2006 Census consultation, this second round of consultations integrated discussions on the dissemination program, questionnaire content and census geography. However, the focus of this second round of consultations was placed on the 2001 Census of Population dissemination program and proposed directions for 2006 geography. Consultations were held from January to June 2004. Approximately 1,000 comments were captured through written submissions and the organization of over 40 meetings across Canada.

This report describes users' feedback on dissemination and geography issues received through this second round of consultations. In addition to user's comments, web metrics information serves as a valuable tool when evaluating the accessibility of public good data tables. Therefore, page view counts have been integrated in this report.

Some general planning assumptions that focus on the production and dissemination of 2006 Census products are also included in this report.
