1. Mental health among women and girls of diverse backgrounds in Canada before and during the COVID-19 pandemic: An intersectional analysis

Description: Mental health disparity is associated with diverse characteristics, such as gender, socioeconomic status, Indigenous identity, immigrant status, race, disability, and sexual orientation. However, intersectional studies on women’s mental health have been rare, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic period. To fill this research gap, this study examines women’s and girls’ self-reported mental health before and during the COVID-19 pandemic using seven characteristics, including Indigenous identity, immigrant status, racialized background, LGB+ sexual orientation, disability, and socioeconomic status (low income and unemployment).

3. Sexual Misconduct in the Canadian Armed Forces

Description: This article presents results from the first Survey of Sexual Misconduct in the Canadian Armed Forces. Namely, the prevalence of general sexualized behaviour in the workplace; discrimination on the basis of sex, sexual orientation, or gender identity; personal experiences of discrimination or sexualized behaviour; the prevalence of sexual assault; and knowledge of policies on sexual misconduct and perceptions of responses to sexual misconduct are examined. Where possible, results are analyzed by sex, environmental command, type of service, age, rank, and number of years of service.

Description: This study examines functional health difficulties among lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) men and women aged 18 and older in Canada. Using data from the Canadian Community Health Survey (2017 to 2018), this release provides an overview of self-reported general health, mental health, and difficulty in the six Washington Group functional health components (vision, hearing, mobility, cognition, self-care and communication) by sexual orientation and gender.

5. Cybervictimization and mental health among Canadian youth

Description: Cybervictimization has emerged as a potentially serious form of victimization and has been associated with negative mental health outcomes, including depression, anxiety, disordered eating, and suicidality. However, very little research has examined the prevalence and correlates of cybervictimization among diverse subpopulations of youth. Using data from the 2019 Canadian Health Survey on Children and Youth, this study describes the proportion of Canadian adolescents who have experienced cybervictimization and how this proportion may differ among subpopulations of Canadian adolescents (based on gender identity, ethnicity, and sexual orientation). This study also examines how these sociodemographic predictors are associated with the experience of cybervictimization and associations between cybervictimization and adolescent mental health and whether these associations differ among subpopulations.

The expansion in scope of UK equality legislation has led to a requirement for data on sexual orientation. In response, the Office for National Statistics has initiated a project aiming to provide advice on best practice with regard to data collection in this field, and to examine the feasibility of providing data that will satisfy user needs. The project contains qualitative and quantitative research methodologies in relation to question development and survey operational issues. This includes:A review of UK and international surveys already collecting data on sexual orientation/identityA series of focus groups exploring conceptual issues surrounding "sexual identity" including related terms and the acceptability of questioning on multi-purpose household surveysA series of quantitative trials with particular attention to item non-response; question administration; and data collectionCognitively testing to ensure questioning was interpreted as intended.Quantitative research on potential bias issues in relation to proxy responsesFuture analysis and reporting issues are being considered alongside question development e.g. accurately capturing statistics on populations with low prevalence
