Description: This Census of Agriculture product provides a comprehensive picture of the agriculture industry across Canada, every five years. It presents detailed farm and farm operator information at the Canada, Province/Territory, Census Agricultural Region (CAR), Census Division (CD) and Census Consolidated Subdivision (CCS) geographic levels.

Farm information includes variables such as farm numbers, farm type, crops, horticulture, greenhouses, mushrooms, maple taps, Christmas trees, land use, land tenure, inputs, manure, irrigation, tillage and seeding practices, land practices and features, livestock, poultry, bees, organic farming, farm capital, farm operating revenues and expenses, direct sales, agricultural paid workers, technologies, renewable energy production and farm succession plans.

Farm operator variables depict the men and women who make the management decisions on Canadian farms. They include number of farm operators, age, sex and average weekly time contribution to farm work and to other paid work.

Each month, this publication provides estimates of percentage changes for sales and inventories and stocks/sales ratios for wholesale merchants (excluding agents and brokers and wholesalers of grain and petroleum products). Data are presented separately for eleven major trade groups of wholesalers for Canada and in aggregate for each province and territory. The publication contains month-to-month, year-to-year and cumulative trends, a retrospective for the last six months and data analysis.

The Whole Farm Data Base (WFDB) is the product of a joint venture between Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and Statistics Canada. It was developed with the intention to meet the increasing demands of users of agricultural statistics for more disaggregated data at the whole farm level. The WFDB provides the means for users to evaluate agricultural policies and programs as well as analyze the viability, stability, and competitiveness of various farm businesses.

Integrating into one base the agricultural data, which are available from administrative and survey sources, is the essence of the WFDB. It can offer users access to a wider than ever range of disaggregated physical and financial data at the farm level.

This reference manual will familiarize potential users of the WFDB with the structure of the data base and the quality of the data and give a description of the WFDB products and services that are currently available.

This publication contains annual data from 1926 to date for farm operating expenses and depreciation charges for Canada and the provinces. Data highlights and concepts and methods are also included.

In May, annual measures for the previous two calendar years are subject to revision. In November, estimates for the previous three years may be revised. Every five years a historical revision is done, based on the results of the Census of Agriculture. Although the data are available in late May and late November, the publication is not completed and released until the following July and January, respectively.

Productivity growth in Canada (PGC), is the reference publication on productivity in Canada. The objective of this publication is twofold: a) to illustrate the importance of productivity trends on the changes in living standards in Canada and, b) to measure the productivity performance of the Canadian economy in comparison with the United States, in particular. PGC includes articles on productivity and related issues and serves as a vehicle to understanding the sources underlying economic growth in Canada.

This product presents basic counts and totals for all 2001 Census of Agriculture farm variables, including number and type of farms; crop, horticulture and land use areas; land management practices; numbers of livestock and poultry; organic farming; computer use; farm machinery and equipment; farm capital; and farm operating expenses and receipts. It provides a comprehensive picture of the agriculture industry across Canada. It depicts the men and women who make the day-to-day management decisions on Canadian farms. The farm operator variables include number of farm operators, age, sex, residence status, farm and non-farm work and farm-related injuries. This product also presents selected historical farm and farm operator data for Canada and the provinces. The geographic levels presented include Canada, the provinces/territories, census agricultural regions (CAR), census divisions (CD) and the census consolidated subdivisions (CCS). The CCS level is the lowest level of geography available in standard tabulations.

This publication presents data on revenue and expense items from wholesalers and retailers by trade group and by province. There are 16 retail trade groups and 11 wholesale trade groups. Profiles of the retail trade groups are provided for each individual province/territory and are comprised of: number of locations, total operating revenues, cost of goods sold, gross margin and employee earnings and benefits. At the national level for each retail trade group are the following performance indicators: sales to inventory, cost of goods sold to inventory, gross margin and profit margin. Also provided at the national level are total operating revenues, number of locations for independent and for chain stores, the number of retail businesses by trade and total operating revenue by SIC (4 digit when possible).

The 11 wholesale trade groups, plus grain and petroleum products, are profiled for each individual province/territory giving: number of locations, total operating revenues, cost of goods sold, gross margin and employee earnings and benefits. Performance indicators by trade group at the national level including sales to inventory, cost of goods sold to inventory, gross margin and profit margin are provided. Total operating revenue at the national level by Standard Industrial Classification and by class of customer and trade group are also provided.
