    Healthcare is a privilege that Canadians value greatly. However, virtual healthcare was a rarity before COVID-19. Immediately after the pandemic hit in March 2020, Canadians were forced to rethink how they access healthcare. Appointments that would usually have happened in an office were suddenly taking place by phone or video chat. Now, two years later, most health care is conducted virtually. The question is whether the access to virtual healthcare will disappear when the pandemic ends. Our guest, Dr. Gigi Osler, Co-Chair of the Virtual Care Task Force for the Canadian Medical Association, joins us to explore the barriers to virtual healthcare, the changes we saw during the pandemic, and what’s being done to make virtual care permanent.

    Sense of meaning and purpose is an indicator in the Quality of Life Framework for Canada. A strong sense of meaning and purpose is apparent across Canada, as revealed in this infographic which features selected data from Wave 3 of the Canadian Social Survey (October to December 2021). The visuals show the level of meaning and purpose reported by Canadians aged 15 and older by selected demographic characteristics, including geographic region and age group. Here, respondents are said to have a strong sense of meaning and purpose if they answered 8, 9 or 10 to the question “Using a scale of 0 to 10, where 0 means ‘Not at all’ and 10 means ‘Completely,’ to what extent do you feel the things you do in your life are worthwhile?”

    This study presents a socio-demographic profile of children aged 0 to 14 years with affirmative responses to the DSQ filter questions on the 2016 Census. More specifically, the study examined the distributions of activity limitations by children’s age, sex, and family socioeconomic characteristics. The consistency of this profile with well-established patterns of child disability from the existing literature is discussed, and recommendations are made for research to further assess the suitability of the DSQ filter questions for generating an appropriate sampling frame for prospective child disability surveys.

    This dashboard presents selected health indicators for the Canadian population living in the ten provinces related to the COVID-19 pandemic. It includes estimates of the population aged 12 and older, by region and province, age group and gender. The indicators of health included show how Canadians rate their current mental health compared to before the pandemic - worse, the same, or better. It also shows what percentage of Canadians reported taking various precautions to protect against COVID-19, what percentage indicated having received a test for COVID, as well as the rate of those somewhat or very likely to get a vaccine. The data for this dashboard are based on the Canadian Community Health Survey, a annual population health survey that was adapted during the COVID-19 pandemic to produce more timely estimates with new content related to the evolving situation. Estimates in this dashboard are presented beginning from September 2020 and will be updated with each completed collection period available from the survey.

    Canada’s COVID-19 vaccination campaign began on December 14, 2020 with the arrival of a limited number of doses which were prioritized for high-risk populations, such as the elderly, residents and staff of congregate living settings, frontline healthcare workers, and Indigenous populations. Using data from the COVID-19 Vaccination Coverage Survey (CVCS), this study’s objective was to examine sociodemographic disparities in COVID-19 vaccination uptake and intent by identifying the social and economic determinants associated with vaccination uptake among seniors aged 60 years and older (i.e., those eligible for vaccination at the time of the survey) and the determinants of vaccination intent in the entire adult population.
