Description: The air quality indicators reflect the potential for long term exposure of Canadians to ground-level ozone and fine particulate matter (PM2.5), key components of smog and two of the most common and harmful air pollutants to which people are exposed. Both the ozone and PM2.5 indicators are population weighted estimates of average concentrations of these pollutants observed by monitoring stations across Canada. Statistics Canada calculates the indicators based on monitoring data provided by Environment Canada's National Air Pollution Surveillance (NAPS) network.

Description: The purpose of this survey is to obtain information on the quality of surface water in Canada on an annual basis. Data are obtained from water quality monitoring programs managed by Environment Canada, provincial departments, or under federal-provincial agreements. At present, the freshwater quality indicator is presented as a national histogram of three consecutive years worth of results of the water quality index, calculated at individual monitoring sites across the country. International cargo totaled 260.3 million tonnes, a slight increase of 2.2.% compared to the peak established in 1995. Private carriers are businesses that maintain a fleet of trucks to carry their own goods. The motor carriers of freight, private carriers survey covers those private carriers with at least $1 million in annual operating expenses that can provide separate accounting information for their trucking activities within the larger busines. This survey collects data on the size, structure and financial performance of those reporting private carriers. The number of carriers reporting to the survey in 1995 was 442, an increase of 22% over 1994. This increase was due, not to new firms entering the industry, but to an effort to contact as many carriers as possible using a recently updated list. In the following text, 1995 data comparisons with previous years are performed on a per carrier basis.

After the double-digit growth experienced in 1993 and 1994, trucking activity by Canada-based for-hire carriers with annual intercity revenues of at least $1.0 million increased at a more moderate rate in 1995 and 1996.

Sixty-seven Top Canada-based for-hire motor carriers (those with annual revenues over $25 million) posted operating ratios of 0.95 and 0.96 respectively in the third and fourth quarter of 1996. These ratios are identical to those for the same period in 1995. By type of trucking activity, there were some changes for the Specialized Freight carriers where the operating ratio, compared to the same period last year, has deteriorated in the 3rd quarter (from 0.93 to 0.94) and improved in the 4th quarter (from 0.97 to 0.96) There was no change in the operating ratios for the General Freight carriers from a year earlier.

The federal government's Canadian Environmental Industry Strategy consists of a number of initiatives to achieve a cleaner environment and a stronger environmental industry. Statistics Canada received funding from Industry Canada, under Initiative 8 of the strategy, to develop a national statistical database on the environment industry. Statistics Canada began a program consisting of new surveys, modifications to existing surveys and integration of statistics from various components of its economic statistics framework.

The environment "industry" does not exist as an explicit element in any existing classification. This is not surprising, because the environment industry consists of business involved in activities that span a number of different industries in the Standard Industrial Classification. Attempts had been made to identify environmental goods and services in existing classifications, but without appreciable success. It was necessary to develop new ways and new tools to obtain the information. These methods are outlined.

A major objective of the approach adopted by Statistics Canada is to provide sufficient detail to permit comparability of the results with other countries and to satisfy a variety of data needs.

Base pay is the component that does not depend on the individual’s job performance and is mostly determined by an individual’s position and level within a firm’s hierarchy. By contrast, variable pay depends mainly on the individual’s job performance over a given period. As part of variable pay, and to offer a financial incentive, employers can grant equity incentives to board directors and officers in lieu of a higher salary, resulting in lower base pay. This research aims to determine how variable pay explains the gender pay gaps observed among executives in Canada.
