The Canadian Cancer Registry (CCR) represents a collaborative effort between Statistics Canada and the thirteen provincial and territorial cancer registries to create a single database to report annually on cancer incidence and survival at the national and jurisdictional level. While gains have been made to ensure high quality, standardized, and comparable data, the CCR currently lacks information on cancer treatment. The Canadian Council of Cancer Registries (CCCR) identified the need to capture treatment data at the national level as a key strategic priority for 2013/2014. Record linkage was identified as one possible approach to fill this information gap.

The purpose of this study is to examine the feasibility of using record linkage to add cancer treatment information for selected cancers: breast, colorectal and prostate. The objectives are twofold: to assess the quality of the linkage processes and the validity of using linked data to estimate cancer treatment rates at the provincial level. The study is based on the Canadian Cancer Registry (2005 to 2008) linked to the Discharge Abstract Database (DAD) and the National Ambulatory Care Reporting System (NACRS) for four provinces (Ontario, Manitoba, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island). The linkage was proposed by Statistics Canada, the CCCR and the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI). The linkage was approved and conducted at Statistics Canada.

The Omega-3 Index is the combined percentage of EPA and DHA of total fatty acids in red blood cell membranes. This study estimates EPA+DHA levels in terms of the Omega-3 Index and the cut-points for coronary heart disease (CHD) risk among a nationally representative sample of Canadian adults. Within the last decade, Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami has identified mental wellness as the single most important health issue for Inuit (Alianait Inuit-specific Mental Wellness Task Group, 2007). Understanding the complex arrangements of circumstances, behaviours and relationships that are associated with mental health—often termed social determinants—may provide a window for policy makers in addressing mental distress among Inuit.

Using the 2012 Aboriginal Peoples Survey, this study examines the social determinants of higher mental distress among Inuit aged 18 years and over, living in Inuit Nunangat. Mental distress was studied using the ten-item Kessler distress scale (K10); and multivariate analysis was conducted using a logistic regression model.

Data products

The Census Profile is one data product which provides a statistical overview of user selected geographic areas based on a number of detailed variables and/or groups of variables. Other data products include topic-based tabulations which are a series of cross-tabulations ranging in complexity and are available for various levels of geography, as well as the Visual Census which provides a visual representation of selected variables accompanied by their tabular source data.

The Industry Accounts Division of Statistics Canada publishes annual supply and use input-output (I-O) tables. While these rectangular, industry by commodity closely reflect actual economic transactions, certain analytical and modeling purposes, however, require symmetric industry-by-industry I-O tables. The symmetric industry by industry table shows the inter-industry transactions, that is, all purchases of an industry from all other industries including expenditures on imports and inventory withdrawals as well as all expenditures on primary inputs. Similarly, the symmetric final demand table shows all purchases by a final demand category from all other industries, including expenditures on imports and inventory withdrawals as well as all expenditures on indirect taxes. These tables are available at the L level. Some data suppression is necessary at the L level due to confidentiality requirements. Explanation on the methodology used is provided to the user by contacting the Industry Accounts Division of Statistics Canada.

Description: This paper presents a growth accounting framework in which subsoil mineral and energy resources are recognized as natural capital input into the production process. It is the first study of its kind in Canada. Firstly, the income attributable to subsoil resources, or resource rent, is estimated as a surplus value after all extraction costs and normal returns on produced capital have been accounted for. The value of a resource reserve is then estimated as the present value of the future resource rents generated from the efficient extraction of the reserve. Lastly, with extraction as the observed service flows of natural capital, multifactor productivity (MFP) growth and the other sources of economic growth can be reassessed by updating the income shares of all inputs, and then, by estimating the contribution to growth coming from changes in the value of natural capital input. This framework is then applied to the Canadian oil and gas extraction sector.
