The chapter entitled "Women in Canada: The Girl Child" explores the diverse circumstances and experiences of girls aged 17 and under. The chapter describes the demographic characteristics of girls in Canada and presents several topics related to their well-being including: living arrangements, socioeconomic conditions, physical health and development, mortality, emotional and social health and development, child care, school readiness, education, and personal security. Where possible, comparisons are made between girls in different age groups, between girls and boys, and within several subpopulations.

This article provides information on using family-related variables from the microdata files of Canada’s Census of Population. These files exist internally at Statistics Canada, in the Research Data Centres (RDCs), and as public-use microdata files (PUMFs). This article explains certain technical aspects of all three versions, including the creation of multi-level variables for analytical purposes.

This document presents an overview of the trends observed between 2001 and 2016 for the French language and the official language minority population in Newfoundland and Labrador. To this end, it provides Census of Population and National Household Survey information on the population who reported having French as their mother tongue, French spoken at home or used at work as well as those who speak French well enough to sustain a conversation.

In this study, data from the Demosim microsimulation model are used to assess the labour force participation rate of Canadians in 2036 under various scenarios of population growth and participation rate by age. In addition, the article provides an overview of the ethnocultural characteristics of persons who will be in the labour market in 2036, as well as an overview of regional differences that could exist in the labour force in 2036.

The Black population in Canada is widely diverse and has a long and rich history. This publication outlines the demographic and diversity of this population. It contains a mix of tables, charts and maps, as well as short descriptive analysis of census data on some key topics related to the Black population, including gender, age structure, place of birth/generation status, immigration, ethnic origins, languages and geographical highlights.

This document presents a descriptive analysis of recent and established immigrants in Canada, in Canada outside Quebec, in each province and territory, and in the six largest census metropolitan areas (CMAs) in the country, by certain linguistic characteristics and by their main countries of birth. This analysis comprises five sections. The first section presents statistics on immigrants' first official language spoken. The second and third sections respectively address immigrants' mother tongue and the language spoken most often at home. The fourth section provides statistics on their knowledge of the official languages (English and French) by mother tongue of the immigrant population. Lastly, the fifth section explores the main countries of birth of immigrants.

This study provides the first national level estimates of hospitalizations due to opioid poisonings by patient characteristics using data from the National Household Survey (2011) linked to the Discharge Abstract Database (2011 to 2016).

This chapter of Women in Canada explores the criminal victimization of women and girls as well as their involvement in the criminal justice system as offenders. It covers the types of criminal victimization experienced by females over time; where possible, highlighting important differences in violent crime by Aboriginal identity, immigrant status, visible minority status and age. The use of formal and informal support services is explored, including changes over time in the use of police services. This chapter also reports trends in the number and types of crimes committed by females, along with their involvement in the criminal courts and correctional systems.
