- 301. Skilled trades employment - Open in new window/tab ArchivedArticles and reports: 75-001-X200811013217Geography: CanadaDescription:
Education and training continue to be important in the labour market. To many, this implies a university degree. But society also needs tradesworkers to perform many vital tasks -- build houses, run the electrical lines, fix plumbing and maintain cars to name just a few. Many businesses are reporting difficulties finding skilled tradespersons and governments are responding with policies to stimulate employment in the trades. Employment trends in selected trades over the past 20 years are examined, along with the socio-economic traits of the workers and the characteristics of their jobs.
Release date: 2008-12-18 - Articles and reports: 71-588-X2008001Description:
This is the first report in the series. This report presents the first national estimates on the labour market experiences of Aboriginal people living off-reserve from the Labour Force Survey (LFS). These estimates are based on the year 2007 and cover Aboriginal people living off-reserve in the ten provinces. This report examines the labour force characteristics of the Aboriginal people, namely the employment and unemployment rates as well as wages by Aboriginal identity. The report further looks at the estimates by non-Aboriginal as well as Aboriginal, North American Indian and Métis populations. Also included is limited analysis on the Inuit population using the 2006 Census results, since the LFS sample size was too small for this group. Data are presented for the following characteristics: age, sex, educational attainment, province or region and industry. Finally, trend analysis is provided for the four western provinces over a four year period. The previously released report (Catalogue no. 71-587-X) provided analysis for the western provinces from April 2004 to March 2005.
Release date: 2008-12-15 - 303. The Canadian Immigrant Labour Market in 2007: Analysis by Region of Postsecondary Education - Open in new window/tab ArchivedArticles and reports: 71-606-X2008004Geography: CanadaDescription:
This series of analytical reports provides an overview of the Canadian labour market experiences of immigrants to Canada, based on data from the Labour Force Survey. These reports examine the labour force characteristics of immigrants, by reporting on employment and unemployment at the Canada level, for the provinces and large metropolitan areas. They also provide more detailed analysis by region of birth, as well as in-depth analysis of other specific aspects of the immigrant labour market.
This is the fourth report in the series. The first two reports analyzed the 2006 labour market experiences of immigrants (a general overview and one specific to country of birth). The third report updated many of these characteristics using 2007 Labour Force Survey data now available. In this fourth report, the focus is on the 2007 labour market experiences of immigrants with postsecondary education, with an analysis by country where the highest level of education was obtained.
Release date: 2008-07-18 - 304. Hours polarization revisited - Open in new window/tab ArchivedArticles and reports: 75-001-X200810313205Geography: CanadaDescription:
Hours of work can vary dramatically from job to job. And some research has indicated that the greater inequality of earnings into the mid-1990s was accompanied by increasing polarization of working hours. More recently, attention has focused on a decline in average working hours. This article quantifies changes in average work hours since the 1970s and examines how changes in the distribution of work hours contribute to the overall trend.
Release date: 2008-06-18 - 305. Retiring together, or not - Open in new window/tab ArchivedArticles and reports: 75-001-X200810413208Geography: CanadaDescription:
Throughout much of the last century, older couples faced only one retirement decision -- the husband's. However, the dramatic rise and sustained participation of women in the paid labour force since the 1970s transformed the retirement transitions of married couples; increasingly, couples had to make two decisions and balance the preferences and constraints of partners who both made substantial contributions to household income. This article looks at the extent to which spouses synchronize the timing of their retirements, the factors associated with taking one or another pathway into retirement and changes in patterns of retirement through the 1990s.
Release date: 2008-06-18 - Articles and reports: 75-001-X200711210467Geography: CanadaDescription:
A key family event, the birth of a child also has broader economic implications. If a mother stays home for an extended period after childbirth, her propensity to work in the future may be reduced since a long career interruption can affect job skills and chances of finding a new job. Although the tradition that women withdraw completely from the labour market upon giving birth has long gone, some mothers may still quit their jobs due to work schedule inflexibility, commuting difficulties, or lack of child care services. Although earnings drops were greater for the early 2000s cohorts of mothers than for the mid-1980s cohorts, the earnings recovery process was shorter.
Release date: 2008-03-18 - Articles and reports: 75-001-X200810113202Geography: CanadaDescription:
Since shelter is the biggest expenditure most households make, its affordability can have a big impact on their wellbeing. Measuring affordability involves comparing housing costs with a household's ability to meet them. Up to now, affordability has been measured at a particular time. New information enables a first-ever longitudinal review of housing affordability. This article examines the likelihood of spending 30% or more of household income on shelter, how often this occurs and whether it is occasional or persistent.
Release date: 2008-03-18 - 308. Earnings in the last decade - Open in new window/tab ArchivedArticles and reports: 75-001-X200810213204Geography: CanadaDescription:
The pay structure for Canada's workers has changed over the past decade. Pay rates have risen in Alberta, especially since 2004. In Ontario and Quebec, earnings in manufacturing have not fallen substantially, despite sharp decreases in employment. Even after the turbulence of the 2001 to 2004 period, average earnings in the CT sector ended up rising 12% in real terms. Along with changes in trade patterns and technology use, demographic trends have also influenced labour market conditions and earnings. This article examines the evolution of earnings in Canada from 1997 to 2007.
Release date: 2008-03-18 - Articles and reports: 75-001-X200710613190Geography: CanadaDescription:
Past studies of illness-related work absences have focused on annual figures and have not differentiated between full- and part-week absences. But the two have quite different seasonal patterns and long-term trends.
Release date: 2007-09-18 - 310. Participation of older workers - Open in new window/tab ArchivedArticles and reports: 75-001-X200710813192Geography: CanadaDescription:
For some years now, attention has been focused on the predicted retirement patterns of the baby-boom generation since a wave of early departures could seriously disrupt the labour force. However, recent studies and indicators suggest that baby boomers may not in fact be collectively fleeing employment for 'freedom 55. In 2006, a record proportion of 60 to 64 year-olds were in the labour force (45%) and the retirement age remained steady at 61.5. The article examines labour market trends of the population aged 55 to 64 and the employment characteristics of workers in this age group vis à vis those aged 25 to 54.

Release date: 2021-01-25 - Surveys and statistical programs – Documentation: 75-005-M2019001Description:
The production of statistics from the Labour Force Survey (LFS) involves many activities, one of which is data processing. This step involves the verification and correction of survey data when required in order to produce microdata files. Beginning in January 2019, LFS processing will be transitioned to a new system, the Social Survey Processing Environment. This document describes the development and testing that preceded the implementation of the new system, and demonstrates that the transition is expected to have minimal impact on LFS estimates and be transparent to users of LFS data.
Release date: 2019-02-08 - Surveys and statistical programs – Documentation: 71-526-XDescription:
The Canadian Labour Force Survey (LFS) is the official source of monthly estimates of total employment and unemployment. Following the 2011 census, the LFS underwent a sample redesign to account for the evolution of the population and labour market characteristics, to adjust to changes in the information needs and to update the geographical information used to carry out the survey. The redesign program following the 2011 census culminated with the introduction of a new sample at the beginning of 2015. This report is a reference on the methodological aspects of the LFS, covering stratification, sampling, collection, processing, weighting, estimation, variance estimation and data quality.

This document summarizes these changes chronologically and provides references to more detailed information sources. Among the most significant changes were two questionnaire redesigns, which occurred approximately 20 years apart, in 1976 and 1997.
