This study examines the evolution of the socioeconomic situation of the Black population in Canada for the period 2001 to 2016. The main subjects treated are the family situation, the levels of education, employment and wages for the adult population (25-59 years-old), as well as the low income situation of children (less than 15 years-old). Black populations are compared with the rest of the population along two dimensions: sex and generation status.

Description:

This booklet examines the socioeconomic situation of the Black population in Canada and focusses primarily on the education and labour market outcomes as well as family structures of the Black population in comparison to the rest of the population. In addition, the perceptions of Black individuals in the labour force, their experiences with discrimination and their resiliency will be examined. Data from the Census as well as the General Social Survey have been used and have been disaggregated by sex for the Black population and the rest of the population.

Description: Renters’ shelter costs can vary substantially by duration of tenancy. Renters who recently moved into their dwelling can pay substantially more than longstanding renters. This tenure-based discrepancy in rents paid can have important implications in terms of affordability and residential mobility. This study sheds light on trends in shelter cost differences by duration of tenancy from 1996 to 2021, and how this gap in rental costs between recent renters and longer-term renters varies across municipalities and neighbourhoods.

Description: The focus of this portrait is the analysis of the sociodemographic, linguistic, ethnocultural, and religious diversity of the Black populations in Canada. Using Census of Population data (1996 to 2021) and data from the 2011 National Household Survey, the paper explores the evolution of the Black populations in Canada and their composition in 2021. An intersectional perspective is used to explore the interactions between multiple diversity measures. By examining the main characteristics of the Black populations born in Canada, the Caribbean and Africa, this analytical portrait demonstrates that there is not one, but many diverse Black populations in Canada.

Description: The current study uses the 2011 National Household Survey and the 2016 and 2021 Censuses to provide data on the number of Indigenous foster children in private households, foster child rates, and disparity between Indigenous and non-Indigenous foster care rates between 2011 and 2021. Subsequently, select sociodemographic characteristics of Indigenous children in foster care and household characteristics are explored using the 2021 Census.
