Sales of mushrooms

$589 million

2019

6.5% increase

(annual change)

Canadian mushroom growers produced 145,631 short tons of mushrooms in 2019, up 5.2% compared with 2018 and the fourth consecutive year-over-year increase. Improved growing mediums and the use of nutrient-rich spawn have contributed to the production increases since 2016.

The total value of mushrooms rose 6.5% in 2019, mainly due to production increases. Prices have remained relatively stable since 2016.

Harvested (+13.3%) and cultivated (+7.3%) area both rose in 2019, largely due to operations in British Columbia, where growers harvested 29.3% more area and sold 19.2% more mushrooms than in 2018.

Ontario accounted for the largest share of production (50.5%), followed by British Columbia (42.7%).

Canada exported 56,522 short tons of Agaricus mushrooms in 2019, up 15.1% from a year earlier, with the vast majority destined for the United States (99.5%).

These estimates are based on the 2019 mushroom growing season and are pre-COVID-19. The impact of the pandemic will be addressed in the June 2021 data release for the 2020 reference year.

  Note to readers

As a result of the timing of the COVID-19 pandemic, active collection of data for the survey was halted earlier than originally planned to minimize burden on farm operators. This resulted in a lower-than-usual response rate compared with previous years.
