Canadian mushroom growers produced 138,412 short tons of mushrooms, up 4.4% compared with 2017, marking the third year-over-year increase. Production was at its highest level since 2012, due in part to improvements in growing mediums and nutrient-rich spawn.
The total value of mushrooms increased 4.9% in 2018, mainly due to the production increase. Prices were relatively stable compared with the previous year.
Harvested area (+5.5%) and cultivated area (+2.5%) were both up compared with 2017.
Ontario accounted for the largest share of production (55.1%), followed by British Columbia (37.7%). Growers in Ontario sold 9.7% more mushrooms than in 2017, with 76,275 short tons sold in 2018.
In Ontario, the total number of employees rose 31.4%, due in part to new operations and new hirings in existing operations.
Canada exported 49,107 short tons of Agaricus mushroom, an increase of 18.6% compared with 2017, with 99.7% going to the United States.
