Today, Statistics Canada is updating the Market Basket Measure (MBM) thresholds table to include poverty thresholds for Nunavut. This update marks the end of the review period for the proposed methodology for the Northern Market Basket Measure (MBM-N) for Nunavut. For more information on the proposed MBM-N methodology for Nunavut, please see the Construction of a Northern Market Basket Measure of poverty for Nunavut paper.

The MBM-N methodology for Nunavut was a collaborative effort with the Government of Nunavut, National Indigenous Organizations representing Inuit people (e.g., Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated and Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami), Employment and Social Development Canada and Health Canada.

For more information on the MBM-N methodology for Nunavut or for Nunavut poverty estimates please contact us (statcan.mbm-mpc.statcan@statcan.gc.ca).

  Note to readers

The third comprehensive review of the Market Basket Measure (MBM) has begun and will be finalized in 2025. The review is a collaborative process between Employment and Social Development Canada and Statistics Canada. The official launch of the review was announced on June 6, 2023, with the release of a paper that highlighted the anticipated activities and the planned schedule for the review period. For more information on the engagement activities planned for the review, please see the Market Basket Measure of poverty (2023-base) consultative engagement webpage.

The third comprehensive review of the MBM will conclude with the creation of the 2023-base for the MBM. The 2023-base MBM for the provinces will lay the foundation for the creation of the 2023-base Northern Market Basket Measure (MBM-N) for the territories, so it is important to become involved in the comprehensive review process so that your feedback can be heard.
