Highlights
- Between July 1 and October 1 2019, Canada’s population grew by 208,234. This is the first time that the country's population has grown by more than 200,000 people in a single quarter.
- The country's population growth rate in the third quarter of 2019 (+0.6%) is the highest recorded since the beginning of the current demographic accounting system (July 1971).
- On October 1, 2019, Canada’s population was 37,797,496.
- Between July 1 and October 1, 2019, Canada welcomed 103,751 new immigrants, an unprecedented number, all quarters combined. A record increase in the number of non-permanent residents (+82,438) has also been recorded over the same period.
- Population growth was highest in British Colombia (+0.7%) and lowest in Newfoundland and Labrador (+0.1%).
- International migration accounted for 83.4% of the overall Canadian population growth in the third quarter of 2019, a proportion that continues to grow.
- After three uninterrupted years of losses, Alberta has seen gains in its interprovincial migration over the last five quarters, with the third quarter of 2019 having had the highest gains (+2,285 persons).
- The systematic losses associated with interprovincial migration usually recorded in Quebec have been greatly reduced, such that they have been close to zero since the beginning of the year (-200 persons in the third quarter of 2019).
