There were 448,480 aircraft take-offs and landings at the 93 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations in March 2013 compared with 456,633 movements in March 2012. Year-over-year decreases were reported by 63 airports. Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, Ontario (36,924 movements) and Vancouver International, British Columbia (23,851 movements) were the most active sites in March.
Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) decreased (-5,614 movements) in March 2013 from the same month in 2012. These airports reported 317,214 movements compared with 322,828 movements in March 2012. Year-over-year variations ranged from an increase of 1,369 movements (+38.5%) at Boundary Bay, British Columbia to a drop of 928 movements (-47.3%) at Norman Wells, Northwest Territories. Sixty airports reported year-over-year decreases in the number of itinerant aircraft movements in March 2013.
In March 2013, there were 131,266 local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) recorded. This represents a decrease of 1.9% (-2,539 movements) compared with the previous year. Montréal/St-Hubert, Quebec (8,551 movements) and Calgary/Springbank, Alberta (8,204 movements) recorded the largest number of local movements.
Itinerant movements: domestic, transborder and international
There were 259,571 domestic itinerant movements reported by 93 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations in March 2013, down 2.1% (-5,462 movements) from March 2012. Vancouver International, British Columbia (17,781 movements) and Calgary International, Alberta (15,413 movements) reported the greatest number of domestic itinerant movements. Sixty-one airports reported year-over-year decreases in the number of domestic movements in March 2013.
Seventy-eight airports recorded 43,672 transborder itinerant movements (between Canada and the United States) in March 2013, up from 43,656 movements the same month in 2012. Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, Ontario (16,716 movements) reported the greatest number of transborder itinerant movements.
In March 2013, forty-seven airports reported 13,971 other international itinerant movements, down 1.2% from March 2012. Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, Ontario, recorded 5,873 other international itinerant movements. This represents 42.0% of the total other international itinerant movements reported.
