    To measure this dimension, Statistics Canada developed an Index of Remoteness of communities. For each populated community (census subdivision), the index is determined by its distance to all the population centres defined by Statistics Canada in a given travel radius, as well as their population size.

GeoSearch will display the appropriate map showing boundaries and other features. GeoSearch automatically displays population and dwelling counts for the selected places, and shows what kind of geographic area it is and its relationship to other geographic areas.

    New functionality for 2006 includes links to 2006 Census reference maps and community profile tables, and a thematic mapping option for selected census topics (for selected levels of geography).

    GeoSearch is a new Internet tool that makes it easy to find any place in Canada, see it on a map, and get basic geographic and population and dwelling data for that place. To find a specific place of interest, users can click and zoom on a map of Canada or they can search by place name, street name, street intersection or postal code. GeoSearch finds and displays the appropriate map that shows boundaries and other features. GeoSearch also automatically displays population and dwelling counts for the selected place, and shows what kind of geographic area it is and its relationship to other geographic areas. Go to the Census Geography area on the Statistics Canada website. GeoSearch 2001 is no longer available. Information relating to the census standard geographic areas can be found in the Geography section of the census website.     Description: This file provides data on family composition in Canada.

    The 2001 Census Public Use Microdata Files (PUMFs) contain samples of anonymous responses to the 2001 Census questionnaire. The files have been carefully scrutinized to ensure the complete confidentiality of the individual responses. Three files are available: the Individuals File, the Families File, and the Households and Housing File.

    Microdata files are unique among census products in that they give users access to non-aggregated data. The user can group and manipulate these variables to suit data and research requirements. Tabulations excluded from other census products can be created or relationships between variables can be analysed using different statistical tests. These files provide quick access to a comprehensive social and economic database about Canada and its people.

    Most of the census subject matter is included in the microdata files. For the anonymity of respondents, geographic identifiers have been restricted to provinces, territories and large metropolitan areas.

How do I use the filters and the search box?

  • You can initiate a search by entering keywords or selecting filters (e.g., under Subject, Geography, etc.) on the left side of the page.
