    Description:

    This paper proposes an approach for small area prediction based on data obtained from periodic surveys and censuses. We apply our approach to obtain population predictions for the municipalities not sampled in the Brazilian annual Household Survey (PNAD), as well as to increase the precision of the design-based estimates obtained for the sampled municipalities. In addition to the data provided by the PNAD, we use census demographic data from 1991 and 2000, as well as a complete population count conducted in 1996. Hierarchically non-structured and spatially structured growth models that gain strength from all the sampled municipalities are proposed and compared.

    This paper examines the different types of deflators that are used to compare volume estimates of national income and production across countries. It argues that these deflators need to be tailored to the specific income concept used for study. If the potential to spend concept is employed, a purchasing power deflator is needed. If a production based concept is used, a producing power deflator is necessary. The paper argues that present practice produces a hybrid deflator that fails both purposes when terms of trade shifts are large and offers a solution.

  • 10. Achievements and challenges: An overview of data collection methodology at the UK Office for National Statistics Archived

    Description:

    In the mid 1990s the first question testing unit was set-up in the UK Office for National Statistics (ONS). The key objective of the unit was to develop and test the questions and questionnaire for the 2001 Census. Since the establishment of this unit the area has been expanded into a Data Collection Methodology (DCM) Centre of Expertise which now sits in the Methodology Directorate. The DCM centre has three branches which support DCM work for social surveys, business surveys, the Census and external organisations.

    In the past ten years DCM has achieved a variety of things. For example, introduced survey methodology involvement in the development and testing of business survey question(naire)s; introduced a mix-method approach to the development of questions and questionnaires; developed and implemented standards e.g. for the 2011 census questionnaire & showcards; and developed and delivered DCM training events.

    This paper will provide an overview of data collection methodology at the ONS from the perspective of achievements and challenges. It will cover areas such as methods, staff (e.g. recruitment, development and field security), and integration with the survey process.

How do I use the filters and the search box?

How do I refine my search?

    • For example, “labour force survey” will limit results to products containing this phrase.

  • Use “or” between keywords to obtain results that contain one or more search terms.

How does the search work?

  • This search looks for results that have your query term in the title, description, subject, geography, product number or other information about the product.

    • For example, when searching the term ‘Diseases’, all results with the word ‘Diseases’ in the title, description or tagged the subject appear.

  • The text within an article or publication are not searched. For full text searching of articles, use the site search.

How are the results ordered?

The Sort by feature provides three options:

  • By date – sorts results by product release date starting with the most recent.
  • By relevance is only needed or beneficial when you use the search box and submit a search query. Results are ordered by a combination of where the search term appears in the content, e.g., if it appears in the title, it likely means the product is more relevant to your search; how up to date or new the content in the product is; how popular the product is; and other factors.
  • By title – sorts results alphabetically.
