- Articles and reports: 16-002-X202600100001Description: This article presents data on the extent and condition of Canada’s ocean and coastal ecosystems, as well as the ecosystem services—also known as “nature’s contributions to people”—they provide. Building on earlier pilot accounts, this article offers new physical and monetary estimates of ocean ecosystem services. It also marks the release of experimental monetary valuations of selected ocean ecosystem services, such as commercially harvested wild fish and seafood, nature-based tourism, and blue carbon sequestration.Release date: 2026-01-21
- Articles and reports: 16-508-X2025002Description: This fact sheet presents gross domestic product (GDP) data at the sub-drainage area geography. It outlines the way that natural resources and biophysical features throughout Canada help determine which industries will thrive in various areas across the country. It uses experimental mapped GDP data that shows the relationship between the environment and human activity. This article examines industries such as oil and gas, mining, electricity generation, agriculture, forestry, sight-seeing transportation, and accommodation and restaurants.Release date: 2025-10-02
- 3. Accounting for ecosystem change in Canada: Selected findings from Human Activity and the Environment, 2021 ArchivedStats in brief: 11-627-M2021073Description: Using data from the publication Human Activity and the Environment (HAE), 2021, this infographic provides selected highlights from the report, covering ecosystem extent, condition and services.Release date: 2022-01-25
- 4. Measuring ecosystem goods and services in Canada ArchivedArticles and reports: 16-201-X201300011875Description:
The article "Measuring ecosystem goods and services in Canada" presents preliminary results achieved through a two-year interdepartmental project to develop experimental ecosystem accounts and the required statistical infrastructure. It provides an overview of ecosystem accounting and valuation and presents several measures of the quantity and quality of ecosystems and ecosystem goods and services (EGS). These measures focus on land cover, human landscape modification, ecosystem potential of the boreal forest, biomass extraction, marine and coastal EGS, and wetland EGS. The report also includes a case study on the Thousand Islands National Park exploring monetary valuation of EGS and concludes with a research agenda for future work on this topic.
