    Description: Credit is a key element to modern economic life in Canada and immigrants may be at greater risk of lacking access to credit markets since credit information is, for the most part, not shared across international borders. Using data from the Survey of Financial Security, this paper studies the extent to which immigrants to Canada have access to credit and whether they are credit invisible. A person is credit invisible if they do not have a sufficient credit history for a credit reporting agency to be able to calculate a credit score or sufficient information to calculate the most accurate credit scores.

  • 2. Experimental Economic Activity Indexes for Canadian Provinces and Territories: Experimental Measures Based on Combinations of Monthly Time Series

    Timely measures of economic activity are critical for understanding how economies perform, and for informing policy responses to macroeconomic fluctuations. The onset of the pandemic due to the emergence of the SARS-Cov-2 virus emphasized this, as well as the need for geography-specific measures. Presently, Canada has a robust system for producing up-to-date measures of activity, such as real gross domestic product (GDP), at the national level. For provincial and territorial economies, monthly information on labour markets or particular activities such as manufacturing or international trade are available, but a monthly measure of aggregate economic activity is not available. This paper explores methods for creating a monthly indicator of economic activity for the provinces and territories.

    Description:

    While the presence of provincial border effects—the relative weakness of inter-provincial trade compared to intra-provincial trade—is well established, it remains unclear what underlies them. Parsing out the sources of the border effect is important, because it provides policy makers with much more information on where to direct their efforts. This paper takes a step in this direction by asking whether part of the border effect can be attributed to how multi-unit firms organize their production within and across provincial borders. Networks of operating units controlled by the same enterprise lower the cost of trade by shipping goods between units as value is added through the production chain or via the use of common upstream and downstream supply chains. Higher costs of operating these networks in multiple provinces may act as a barrier to firm networks. By combining measures of regional trade and firm networks over a nine-year period (2004 to 2012), the study tests these propositions.

    For many goods, such as dairy products and alcoholic beverages, the presence of substantial (non-tariff) barriers to provincial trade is widely recognized. If these non-tariff barriers matter, intraprovincial trade should be stronger than interprovincial trade, all else being equal. However, comparing intraprovincial and interprovincial trade levels is challenging, because intraprovincial trade is heavily skewed toward short-distance flows. When these are not properly taken into account by gravity-based trade models, intraprovincial trade levels—provincial border effects—tend to be overestimated.

How are the results ordered?

The Sort by feature provides three options:

  • By date – sorts results by product release date starting with the most recent.
  • By relevance is only needed or beneficial when you use the search box and submit a search query. Results are ordered by a combination of where the search term appears in the content, e.g., if it appears in the title, it likely means the product is more relevant to your search; how up to date or new the content in the product is; how popular the product is; and other factors.
  • By title – sorts results alphabetically.
