Description: Response mobility in the Indigenous population of Canada refers to responses changing between Indigenous and non-Indigenous identity categories from one census cycle to the next. This study uses linked data from the Census of Population to examine how response mobility affected the size and composition of the Indigenous identity population from 2016 to 2021, as well as how these changes varied by province or territory. The impacts of response mobility on demographic and socioeconomic trends of Indigenous peoples are also explored.

The 2006 Aboriginal Children's Survey is used to provide broad indicators of young Aboriginal children's experiences with Aboriginal languages. Data include their ability to speak and understand an Aboriginal language, and their exposure to Aboriginal languages at home and in the community. Family characteristics associated with Aboriginal language knowledge are also presented. Finally, the hopes and expectations of parents regarding their children's acquisition of an Aboriginal language are described.

Métis peoples make up one third of the Aboriginal population in Canada (about 390,000 people in 2006). Using the 2006 Aboriginal Peoples Survey (15 and older) and Métis Supplement this article explores various cultural activities of the Métis population. More specifically, it considers involvement in traditional activities, such as: arts and crafts, hunting, fishing, trapping, and gathering wild vegetation. It also explores Aboriginal language use, involvement in Métis-specific organizations, and spiritual and religious practices. Findings are presented by sex, age, and region.

Beginning in late 2006, the Social and Aboriginal Statistics Division of Statistics Canada embarked on the process of review of questions used in the Census and in surveys to produce data about Aboriginal peoples (North American Indian, Métis and Inuit). This process is essential to ensure that Aboriginal identification questions are valid measures of contemporary Aboriginal identification, in all its complexity. Questions reviewed included the following (from the Census 2B questionnaire):- the Ethnic origin / Aboriginal ancestry question;- the Aboriginal identity question;- the Treaty / Registered Indian question; and- the Indian band / First Nation Membership question.

Additional testing was conducted on Census questions with potential Aboriginal response options: the population group question (also known as visible minorities), and the Religion question. The review process to date has involved two major steps: regional discussions with data users and stakeholders, and qualitative testing. The regional discussions with over 350 users of Aboriginal data across Canada were held in early 2007 to examine the four questions used on the Census and other surveys of Statistics Canada. Data users included National Aboriginal organizations, Aboriginal Provincial and Territorial Organizations, Federal, Provincial and local governments, researchers and Aboriginal service organizations. User feedback showed that main areas of concern were data quality, undercoverage, the wording of questions, and the importance of comparability over time.

This report explores some initial findings regarding the health and well-being of Métis adults (aged 15 and over) and children (aged 6 to 14) from the 2006 Aboriginal Peoples Survey. Information on self-rated health, physical activity level, and opinions on how Métis can improve their health are provided. Important indicators of health such as chronic conditions and healthcare utilization, and some key social determinants of health are also examined. Some comparisons are made over time (between 2001 and 2006), revealing areas of improvement and decline. In addition, some comparisons are made between Métis men and women from urban and rural areas and from different age groups. Finally, where possible, comparisons are made between Métis and the total Canadian population.

Depending on the application, estimates using any of the following concepts may be appropriate for the Aboriginal population: (1) Aboriginal identity, (2) Aboriginal ancestry, (3) Registered or Treaty Indian status and (4) Membership in a First Nation or Indian band. The NHS Profile is one data product that provides a statistical overview of user selected geographic areas based on several detailed variables and/or groups of variables. Other data products include data tables which represent a series of cross tabulations ranging in complexity and are available for various levels of geography.

This paper describes a new module that will project families and households by Aboriginal status using the Demosim microsimulation model. The methodology being considered would assign a household/family headship status annually to each individual and would use the headship rate method to calculate the number of annual families and households by various characteristics and geographies associated with Aboriginal populations.

Description: While Statistics Canada recognizes the importance of having good quality data for First Nations communities that can be used for decision making and program planning, there is currently very little data (aside from Census data) about the people living on First Nations communities across Canada. This pilot survey is an important step aimed at determining the best methods for collecting data in these communities. It will also provide an opportunity to learn aspects of survey taking that may be unique in First Nations communities, such as communications with community leaders and respondents.

Description: Complementing the data collected by the census, the National Household Survey (NHS) is designed to provide information about people in Canada by their demographic, social and economic characteristics. In October 2014, Statistics Canada will be conducting a voluntary test in selected locations to evaluate the processes, procedures and systems that will be used for the 2016 Census Program. This ensures that quality data are available in 2016 to support a wide variety of programs.
