- Articles and reports: 75F0002M2024005Description: The Canadian Income Survey (CIS) has introduced improvements to the methods and data sources used to produce income and poverty estimates with the release of its 2022 reference year estimates. Foremost among these improvements is a significant increase in the sample size for a large subset of the CIS content. The weighting methodology was also improved and the target population of the CIS was changed from persons aged 16 years and over to persons aged 15 years and over. This paper describes the changes made and presents the approximate net result of these changes on the income estimates and data quality of the CIS using 2021 data. The changes described in this paper highlight the ways in which data quality has been improved while having little impact on key CIS estimates and trends.Release date: 2024-04-26

- Articles and reports: 11-633-X2020001Description:
This paper reviews alternative measures of income mixing within geographic units and applies them using geographically detailed income data derived from tax records. It highlights the characteristics of these measures, particularly their ease of interpretation and their suitability to decomposition across different levels of analysis, from neighbourhoods to individual apartment buildings. The discussion focuses on three measures: the dissimilarity index, the information theory index and the divergence index (D-index). Particular emphasis is placed on the D-index because it most effectively describes how income distributions at the sub-metropolitan level (e.g., neighbourhoods) differ from distributions at the metropolitan level (i.e., how much income sorting occurs across neighbourhoods). Furthermore, the D-index can consistently measure the contributions of income sorting within neighbourhoods (e.g., across individual apartment buildings) to the degree of income mixing at the neighbourhood and metropolitan scales.

This study uses data from the 2016 Census to examine the housing, income and residential dissimilarity of the Indigenous population living in private households in the 49 census metropolitan areas (CMAs) and census agglomerations (CAs) that were large enough to be divided into census tracts, and provides a short description of neighbourhoods with a large concentration of Indigenous people.

Release date: 2019-12-05 - 26. Income Growth per Capita in the Provinces since 1950 ArchivedArticles and reports: 11-626-X2019009Description:
This article in the Economic Insights series illustrates how real income progressed across the provinces from 1950 to 2016. The performance of the provinces is discussed using a new set of long-run estimates for real gross domestic income per capita. This new dataset allows, for the first time, trends in aggregate real income across the provinces to be examined for the last 66 years. Long-run data allow the amplitude of cycles across time to be demonstrated, and provide sufficient data to understand changes in trends in provincial economies that are sometimes subject to long commodity cycles.

Using data from the 2016 Census of Population, we shed light on a segment of homelessness by characterising individuals who were staying in a shelter on Census Day in 2016. The study profiles these individuals by geography, age, sex, and marital status. The study also looks more closely at income levels and income sources in order to highlight the differences between residents who live in particular types of shelters as well as the population living in private dwellings.
