Description: Physical flow accounts (PFA) record the annual flows of natural resources, products and residuals between the Canadian economy and the environment. The Water Account describes the use of the natural resource input of water and of water accessed through municipal water supply or irrigation systems by industries, governments, institutions, and households.

Description:

Part of Statistics Canada's Econnections: linking the environment and the economy statistical series, this product consists of a printed publication combined with a CD-ROM. The product offers summary indicators plus detailed statistics that quantify the relationship between economic activity and the environment. Information is presented for issues ranging from greenhouse gas emissions, water and energy use, to natural resource wealth, environmental expenditures and beyond. The printed publication provides convenient reference to the summary indicators, including analysis of important trends, while the CD-ROM offers straightforward access to dozens of detailed statistical tables that underlie the indicators. An electronic version of the printed publication is included on the CD-ROM and each indicator in the publication is hypertext linked to a group of related statistical tables, allowing the user to easily select detailed statistics for viewing in association with any given indicator. Simple analysis of the statistics can be done directly within the CD-ROM's software. For those who carry out more complex analysis, downloading of data from the CD-ROM in standard spreadsheet format is easily accomplished.

Description: Environmental protection expenditures in the business sector, preliminary data presents operating and capital expenditures made by primary and manufacturing industries in response to, or in anticipation of, environmental regulations and conventions. The results are from the Environmental Protection Expenditure Survey. The data contained in Environmental protection expenditures in the business sector help to fill important gaps in existing information on the demand side of the 'environment industry.' More specifically, it provides a measure of the cost to the industry of adopting pollution prevention and abatement technologies and other environmental protection practices. Data included in Environmental protection expenditures in the business sector are components of a national statistical database on the environment industry.

The present study illustrates the differential impact on regional economies of relative price changes stemming from commodity price movements, exchange rate changes and changes in international manufactured goods prices. It focuses on Canadian provinces, which are a large, geographically distributed federation of regional economies with widely differing economic bases. In this regard, the study illuminates an important method for examining regional economic performance that is particularly well suited to federations such as Russia or the European Monetary Union, or to large countries such as the United States.

Businesses today are involved in a variety of practices aimed at preventing or reducing environmental degradation generated from their production activity. During the 1990s, the environmental regulation context changed. Increasingly, governments have relied on voluntary initiatives undertaken by businesses to reduce pollutants and waste, as opposed to regulations. However, at the same time, the federal authorities have undertaken to revise the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA), in order to increase federal power for environmental regulation but with strong emphasis put on promoting pollution prevention. Consequently, businesses today are looking at alternative ways to limit impacts from their operations on the environment.

Environmental Management and Technologies in the Business Sector presents a profile of business demand for environmental processes and technologies, pollution prevention methods and environmental practices, such as environmental management systems and voluntary actions. What types of treatment processes are the most popular ones for reducing gas emissions, liquid, solid and hazardous waste, noise, radiation and vibration, for saving energy or for site reclamation? What is the market for environmental processes and technologies? What pollution prevention methods are used more frequently? What additional environmental practices have businesses adopted (for instance, are voluntary programs more popular than eco-labelling?)?

This paper is based on results from the Survey of Environmental Protection Expenditures. For the first time, the survey asked detailed questions on the type of environmental process or technology used and the adoption of environmental practices. The paper is a complement to both 1996-1997 and 1998 Environmental Protection Expenditures in the Business Sector reports (Catalogue no. 16F0006XIE).

"Urban greenness" is a measure that assesses the condition and health of an urban landscape. Vegetation contributes to more livable, beautiful communities by helping to clean the air, moderate the local climate, control water flow and provide habitats for wildlife.

Annual average normalized difference vegetation index datasets and annual green/grey classifications are available for the years 2000 to 2025 and cover Canada south of 60°N.

Description: This document describes the methodology used to develop the land cover register, a raster dataset that maps Canada’s terrestrial and freshwater land cover using an 11-class classification system. The data product, with a spatial resolution of 30 metres, represents circa 2020 and was created through the integration of multiple land cover and land use datasets. The dataset and documentation were created by the Census of Environment program and will support Statistics Canada's ecosystem accounting efforts.

Description: This product contains gridded datasets of ocean and coastal ecosystem extent for ocean and coastal areas of Canada. Mapping the extent of ocean ecosystems is the first stage in creating spatially explicit accounts, to help understand the ocean and coastal ecosystems of Canada. The files cover the area from the coastline, defined by the 2021 Statistics Canada Census of Population, to the outer boundary of Canada’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ). Coastal areas of salt marsh are also included in the files.

Description: The Methodological Guide: Canadian System of Environmental-Economic Accounting provides readers with information on environmental-economic accounts at Statistics Canada. It provides links to produced data and publications and describes the concepts, sources, and methods used to compile them. Topics include ecosystem accounting, asset accounts (natural resources in physical and monetary terms), physical flow accounts (energy and water use, and waste and greenhouse gas emissions), environmental activity statistics (expenditures on environmental protection), and the applications and extensions of those accounts (attribution of physical flows to final demand and intensity measures).

This user's guide has been developed by the Environmental Statistics Program to facilitate access to environmental-economic accounting information throughout Statistics Canada and to explain its linkage with international standards, the United Nations System of Environmental-Economic Accounting. This guide is continually being updated to maintain its relevance.
