Description: Mental health disparity is associated with diverse characteristics, such as gender, socioeconomic status, Indigenous identity, immigrant status, race, disability, and sexual orientation. However, intersectional studies on women’s mental health have been rare, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic period. To fill this research gap, this study examines women’s and girls’ self-reported mental health before and during the COVID-19 pandemic using seven characteristics, including Indigenous identity, immigrant status, racialized background, LGB+ sexual orientation, disability, and socioeconomic status (low income and unemployment).

It provides information on various sociodemographic and disability characteristics, such as age, disability type, severity of disability, and employment. It also includes comparisons to the non-2SLGBTQ+ persons with disabilities population by age group.

The Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) Profiles present a series of variables by different geographies, such as health regions, census metropolitan areas and rural/urban groups. Also available are profiles of linguistic minorities, Aboriginals and immigrants. The data provide information on the following variables: self-rated health, self-esteem, body mass index, arthritis/rheumatism, diabetes, asthma, high blood pressure, pain or discomfort, risk of depression, injuries, functional health, two-week disability days, activity limitation, smoking, frequency of heavy drinking, leisure time activities, fruit and vegetable consumption, decision latitude at work, social support, stress, exposure to second-hand smoke, influenza immunization, mammogram screenings, Pap tests, contact with health care providers, contact with dental professionals, contact with medical doctors, and contact with professionals for mental health. Data were collected from over 130,000 respondents, aged 12 or older, residing in households across all provinces and territories.

The Cancer Record is a newsletter for cancer registries in Canada. Its purpose is to improve the quality and consistency of data submitted to the CCR.

Links are also provided to other Statistics Canada data on cancer. The health regions cancer rates are part of the Health Indicators. The Comparable Health Indicators present information on health status and health system performance, including cancer incidence age-standardized cancer.

Description:

The Internet publication, Mental Health and Well-being, from the 2002 Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) provides cross-sectional estimates at provincial and national levels. Topics include the prevalence of various mental disorders (depression, mania, panic disorder, agoraphobia, social phobia), mental health problems (alcohol and illicit drug dependence, gambling, suicide, eating trouble) and access to and use of mental health care services in the past 12 months.

The survey also collects information on many determinants and correlates of mental health such as socio-demographic information, income, stress, medication use and social support.

Data were collected from close to 37,000 respondents, aged 15 or older, residing in households in each province.

The main objective of the 2002 Youth Smoking Survey (YSS) is to provide current information on the smoking behaviour of students in grades 5 to 9 (in Quebec primary school grades 5 and 6 and secondary school grades 1 to 3), and to measure changes that occurred since the last time the survey was conducted in 1994. Additionally, the 2002 survey collected basic data on alcohol and drug use by students in grades 7 to 9 (in Quebec secondary 1 to 3). Results of the Youth Smoking Survey will help with the evaluation of anti-smoking and anti-drug use programs, as well as with the development of new programs.

The Joint Canada/United States Survey of Health is a collaborative project undertaken by Statistics Canada and the National Center for Health Statistics of the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention. It is the first survey that asks a common set of questions to approximately 3,500 Canadians and 5,200 U.S. residents about their health status and access to health care services. The analytical report in this publication compares Canadians and U.S. residents on a broad range of health dimensions including self-perceived health, chronic conditions, functional status, life-style factors such as smoking and obesity, health care utilization and satisfaction with health care services. A public use microdata file (PUMF) has been prepared from the survey, and is available for free download in this publication. The PUMF comes with complete documentation, including a data dictionary, a user guide and a document explaining how the derived variables were created. "Bootstrap" weights for variance calculation are also provided for free download.

The 2001 Participation and Activity Limitation Survey (PALS) is a post-censal survey of adults and children whose everyday activities are limited because of a condition or health problem. A sample of those persons who answered 'Yes' to the 2001 Census disability filter questions were included in the PALS survey population. Approximately 35, 000 adults (aged 15 and over) and 8,000 children (aged 0 to 14) living in private or collective households in the 10 provinces were selected to participate in the survey. Persons living in institutions, on Indian reserves, and in the Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut were excluded from the survey. The data were collected after the 2001 Census, in the fall of 2001.

These tables contain data on the educational attainment, labour force activity and income of adults with and without disabilities.

Description: Sexual health education delivered in school, provided by parents, or provided by other formal sources has been associated with increased rates of condom use and improvements in many other sexual risk behaviours. Friends and the internet are other information sources, although quality and accuracy of information are not always as high. The objective of this study is to update Canadian information about sources of sex education self-reported by adolescents and the related resource of having an adult to talk with about puberty and sexual health. Data from the 2019 Canadian Health Survey on Children and Youth were used to examine the sources typically used to obtain sexual health information by 15- to 17-year-olds, as well as the prevalence and characteristics of adolescents reporting not having an adult to talk with about sexual health and puberty.

Description: Immunization against vaccine-preventable diseases such as shingles and pneumococcal disease play an important role in the overall health and well being of older Canadians. However, vaccine uptake remains low. Using data from The Canadian Health Survey on Seniors – 2019/2020, this study examined the prevalence and factors associated with shingles and pneumococcal vaccination among individuals aged 65 and older living in the community.

Description: As the utility of digital technologies continues to rise, individuals are spending an increasing amount of time online and on their smartphones. While these technologies have created many new opportunities for individuals, there is also growing interest in the connection between these technologies and well-being. Using data from the Canadian Internet Use Survey, this article examines the complex relationship between digital technology use and various measures of well-being, including mental health and interpersonal relationship satisfaction.

Description: Using data from the Canadian Community Health Survey, this study examines men’s and women’s coverage for four types of drug insurance plans (government-sponsored, employer-sponsored, association-sponsored and private drug insurance plans), disaggregated by various socioeconomic, demographic and geographical factors. Description: Research in organizational psychology, occupational health, and other disciplines in the social sciences has established the importance of employee psychological health for organizations, irrespective of their sector or size. This study assesses employee psychological health, a wide range of workplace psychosocial factors as predictors of employee psychological health, and several individual and organizational outcomes of employee psychological health in a Canadian public service organization during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Description: The validity of survival estimates from cancer registry data depends, in part, on the identification of the deaths of deceased cancer patients. People whose deaths are missed seemingly live on forever and are informally referred to as “immortals”, and their presence in registry data can result in inflated survival estimates. This study assesses the issue of immortals in the Canadian Cancer Registry (CCR) using a recently proposed method that compares the survival of long-term survivors of cancers for which “statistical” cure has been reported with that of similar people from the general population.

Description: As of the 1994/95 data year, the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) assumed the data collection and dissemination responsibilities for Mental Health Statistics. Public enquiries about Mental Health Statistics should be directed to CIHI at mentalhealth@cihi.ca. The annual information presently collected by this program provides data on separation (discharges) from psychiatric hospitals and general hospitals for inpatients being treated for mental disorders.

Description: The Canadian Cancer Registry (CCR) is a population based registry that includes data collected and reported to Statistics Canada (StatCan) by each provincial/territorial cancer registry (PTCR). The person based CCR collects information about each new primary cancer diagnosed among Canadian residents since 1992. The objective is to produce standardized and comparable incidence data that can be used to assist and support health planners and decision-makers to: identify risk factors; plan, monitor and evaluate cancer screening, treatment and control programs; and conduct research.

Due to improvements in methodology and timeliness, the duration of data collection has been shortened compared to previous years. As a result, there may have been fewer births and stillbirths captured by the time of the release. The 2017 data are therefore considered preliminary.
