Description: Optimal oral health is an essential element of healthy aging. Oral health problems such as tooth loss, periodontal disease, and dry mouth accumulate throughout adult life and worsen with increasing age. Using data from the 2019/2020 Canadian Health Survey on Seniors, this study explores the link between dental insurance, income, and oral health care access among seniors (aged 65 and over) in Canada. It contributes to the understanding of oral health care among seniors before the implementation of the Canadian Dental Care Plan.

Over the two year period, data are based on interviews with approximately 130,000 respondents aged 12 or older, residing in households in all provinces and territories.

The files include information on a wide range of topics, including: physical activity, height and weight, smoking, exposure to second hand smoke, alcohol consumption, general health, chronic health conditions, injuries, and use of health care services. It also provides information on the socio-demographic, income and labour force characteristics of the population.

The Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) Profiles present a series of variables by different geographies, such as health regions, census metropolitan areas and rural/urban groups. Also available are profiles of linguistic minorities, Aboriginals and immigrants. The data provide information on the following variables: self-rated health, self-esteem, body mass index, arthritis/rheumatism, diabetes, asthma, high blood pressure, pain or discomfort, risk of depression, injuries, functional health, two-week disability days, activity limitation, smoking, frequency of heavy drinking, leisure time activities, fruit and vegetable consumption, decision latitude at work, social support, stress, exposure to second-hand smoke, influenza immunization, mammogram screenings, Pap tests, contact with health care providers, contact with dental professionals, contact with medical doctors, and contact with professionals for mental health. Data were collected from over 130,000 respondents, aged 12 or older, residing in households across all provinces and territories.

The Cancer Survival Statistics tables provide site-specific five-year observed and relative survival estimates for cases diagnosed from 1992 onwards. The Cancer Record is a newsletter for cancer registries in Canada. Its purpose is to improve the quality and consistency of data submitted to the CCR.

The compendium of Canadian Cancer Registry procedures manuals set out the rules for reporting cancer data to the CCR for all provincial and territorial cancer registries.

Links are also provided to other Statistics Canada data on cancer. The health regions cancer rates are part of the Health Indicators. The Comparable Health Indicators present information on health status and health system performance, including cancer incidence age-standardized cancer.

Description: Sexual health education delivered in school, provided by parents, or provided by other formal sources has been associated with increased rates of condom use and improvements in many other sexual risk behaviours. Friends and the internet are other information sources, although quality and accuracy of information are not always as high. The objective of this study is to update Canadian information about sources of sex education self-reported by adolescents and the related resource of having an adult to talk with about puberty and sexual health. Data from the 2019 Canadian Health Survey on Children and Youth were used to examine the sources typically used to obtain sexual health information by 15- to 17-year-olds, as well as the prevalence and characteristics of adolescents reporting not having an adult to talk with about sexual health and puberty.

Description: Immunization against vaccine-preventable diseases such as shingles and pneumococcal disease play an important role in the overall health and well being of older Canadians. However, vaccine uptake remains low. Using data from The Canadian Health Survey on Seniors – 2019/2020, this study examined the prevalence and factors associated with shingles and pneumococcal vaccination among individuals aged 65 and older living in the community.

Description: As the utility of digital technologies continues to rise, individuals are spending an increasing amount of time online and on their smartphones. While these technologies have created many new opportunities for individuals, there is also growing interest in the connection between these technologies and well-being. Using data from the Canadian Internet Use Survey, this article examines the complex relationship between digital technology use and various measures of well-being, including mental health and interpersonal relationship satisfaction.

Description: Using data from the Canadian Community Health Survey, this study examines men’s and women’s coverage for four types of drug insurance plans (government-sponsored, employer-sponsored, association-sponsored and private drug insurance plans), disaggregated by various socioeconomic, demographic and geographical factors. The study further examines the extent of cost-related medication non-adherence among men and women, disaggregated by type of drug insurance plan.

Description: Research in organizational psychology, occupational health, and other disciplines in the social sciences has established the importance of employee psychological health for organizations, irrespective of their sector or size. This study assesses employee psychological health, a wide range of workplace psychosocial factors as predictors of employee psychological health, and several individual and organizational outcomes of employee psychological health in a Canadian public service organization during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Description: The validity of survival estimates from cancer registry data depends, in part, on the identification of the deaths of deceased cancer patients. People whose deaths are missed seemingly live on forever and are informally referred to as “immortals”, and their presence in registry data can result in inflated survival estimates. This study assesses the issue of immortals in the Canadian Cancer Registry (CCR) using a recently proposed method that compares the survival of long-term survivors of cancers for which “statistical” cure has been reported with that of similar people from the general population.

Description: This is an administrative survey that collects demographic information annually from all provincial and territorial vital statistics registries on all stillbirths (fetal deaths) in Canada. 2017 birth and stillbirth data for Yukon are not available. Due to improvements in methodology and timeliness, the duration of data collection has been shortened compared to previous years. As a result, there may have been fewer births and stillbirths captured by the time of the release. The 2017 data are therefore considered preliminary.

Description: The data collected are used to examine trends in the smoking behaviour of the Canadian population 15 years of age and over. The primary focus of the analysis of the data is on three specific groups: non-smokers, regular cigarette smokers and occasional cigarette smokers.

Description: The objectives of the HPS were to update and expand the national and provincial baseline data on the knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, intentions and behaviours of adult Canadians on a wide range of health promotion issues.

Description: The survey's main objectives were to collect etiological, attitudinal, cognitive and behavioural information regarding drinking and driving; to collect information that is representative and useful at both the provincial and national levels; and to collect baseline data which can be used to assess trends and changes in variables over time.

Description: The purpose of this survey was to collect data on the negative consequences associated with drug and alcohol use.

Description: The two primary objectives of the General Social Survey (GSS) are: to gather data on social trends in order to monitor changes in the living conditions and well being of Canadians over time; and to provide information on specific social policy issues of current or emerging interest. The core content on health covered short and long term disability, well-being, height and weight, health problems, smoking alcohol use, physical activity, sleep and use of health care services.

Description: The main objective of the Youth Smoking Survey (YSS) is to provide current information on the smoking behaviour of students in grades 5 to 9 (in Quebec primary school grades 5 and 6 and secondary school grades 1 to 3), and to measure changes that occurred since the last time the survey was conducted. Additionally, the survey collects basic data on alcohol and drug use by students in grades 7 to 9 (in Quebec secondary 1 to 3). Results of the Youth Smoking Survey will help with the evaluation of anti-smoking and anti-drug use programs, as well as with the development of new programs.
