This Statistics Canada publication is a collection of five annotated maps and graphs that describe the geographic distribution of manure in Canada by river basin. The amount of manure produced is estimated along with some of the major substances found in manure: (i) nitrogen, (ii) phosphorus, (iii) total coliform bacteria and (iv) fecal coliform bacteria.

The maps and figures presented in this report indicate that there are geographic areas in Canada characterized by higher levels of total livestock manure and related production of nitrogen, phosphorus and bacteria. Areas that repeatedly showed the highest levels were found in central and southern Alberta, southern Manitoba, southern Ontario, southeastern Quebec, parts of Prince Edward Island, the west Fraser River area in southern British Columbia and an area near Wolfville and Kentville, Nova Scotia.

Often identified as an emerging sector, the environment industry continues to evolve into a complex industry that offers a wide range of technologies and services aimed at protecting the environment and improving environmental quality. This paper analyses Canada's trade in environmental goods and services and compares it with the trade profile of the world's largest environmental market, the United States. What is Canada's trade balance among the different segments of the environment industry? What are the market drivers for environmental goods and services? The relevance of this research is magnified by the current focus on environmental technologies and their key sub-sectors such as climate change technologies, water and wastewater systems and hazardous waste management. The government recently identified these sectors as targeted growth areas for Canada.

Description: This section is concerned with those statistics referring to the allocation of lands and the production of forests. To some extent, these two questions are compatible only in that they have fallen under the same administrative unit for the purposes of management and data collection. They continue together in this volume as a matter of convenience. The data relating to land refer to the allocation of lands for settlement, production and recreation, and are, wherever possible, reported at both the national and provincial level. The major objective of this survey is to collect information on nature-related activities (such as viewing, studying, and photographing nature, camping, hiking, skiing, boating, hunting and fishing), and what these activities contributed to the Canadian economy. The survey was run previously in 1982, 1988 and 1992, and covered fish and wildlife-related activities in the preceding calendar year. This year's survey, covering the 1996 calendar year, is designed to update information from the previous surveys on fish and wildlife-related activities and to provide new information on other nature-related activities.

The results are from the Environmental Protection Expenditure Survey. This report presents results and analysis of the Waste Management Industry Survey: Government Sector. The survey gathers information on waste collection, disposal and recycling practices of Canadian municipalities. The document provides an overview of waste management activities in large municipalities (5 000 or more residents). More than three quarters of the Canadian population are represented in this survey, allowing for estimates of municipal solid waste at the national level and for selected regional groupings. The report also presents information on waste management expenditures by local governments, including expenditures for services provided by contractors and by government employees.

Using data from the 2006 Households and the Environment survey, this study examines home heating practices and temperature controlling behaviours.

Turning down the thermostat temperature setting at night and using programmable thermostats are two ways a household's energy consumption may be reduced. Description: This document describes the methodology used to develop the land cover register, a raster dataset that maps Canada’s terrestrial and freshwater land cover using an 11-class classification system. The data product, with a spatial resolution of 30 metres, represents circa 2020 and was created through the integration of multiple land cover and land use datasets. The dataset and documentation were created by the Census of Environment program and will support Statistics Canada's ecosystem accounting efforts.

Mapping the extent of ocean ecosystems is the first stage in creating spatially explicit accounts, to help understand the ocean and coastal ecosystems of Canada. The files cover the area from the coastline, defined by the 2021 Statistics Canada Census of Population, to the outer boundary of Canada’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ). Coastal areas of salt marsh are also included in the files.
