- Articles and reports: 82-003-X202500500001Description: Girls and young women experience poorer mental health than boys and young men, although the reverse is true for substance use disorders. This study examines whether predisposing characteristics such as immigrant status, population group, rural or urban status, sexual orientation, and neighbourhood income level are correlated with the prevalence of receiving mental health services and substance use disorders, access to formal health supports, and satisfaction with these supports among girls and young women in Canada.Release date: 2025-05-21
- Articles and reports: 82-003-X202500500002Description: The population aged 85 and older is one of the fastest-growing age groups. Previous studies have identified several factors associated with unmet home care needs, including living arrangements, education, income, access to a regular medical doctor, chronic conditions, health status, and functional limitations. However, less is known about the extent to which unmet home care needs vary across the health and care-receiving profiles of the oldest-old Canadians. This study aims to enhance the understanding of the heterogeneity among the community-dwelling population aged 85 years and older in Canada.Release date: 2025-05-21

- Articles and reports: 36-28-0001202500100004Description: While a large body of research has identified several correlates of employee turnover, little is currently known regarding the degree to which employees who work in community care facilities for the elderly leave the nursing and residential care facilities subsector or the health care and social assistance sector in a given year. This study fills this information gap using data from the 2016 Census of Population integrated with Statistics Canada’s Longitudinal Worker File. Sample size limitations restricted the focus of the study to women, who represent the vast majority of employees who work in seniors’ homes.Release date: 2025-01-22
- Articles and reports: 82-003-X202401100001Description: Managing breast cancer involves a range of health care settings and has considerable implications on health care resources. While studies have looked at breast cancer costs in Canada by subtype and stage, there is a gap in understanding breast cancer costs related to phase of care and disease stage. This study assessed health care system costs and resource utilization for adult women with breast cancer in Ontario, Canada. The goal was to update costs by stage, age, and phase of care from a health care system perspective.Release date: 2024-11-20
- Articles and reports: 82-003-X202401100002Description: Compared with their cisgender heterosexual peers, youth who are Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer and those who use other terms related to gender or sexual diversity (2SLGBTQ+) are at elevated risk for mental health difficulties and suicidality. The social experiences of 2SLGBTQ+ youth, including the impact of minority stress, access to social support, and experiences of negative social interactions, may contribute to this disparity. The purpose of this study is to describe the mental health and service use of 2SLGBTQ+ youth compared with those of their cisgender heterosexual peers and (2) examine the role of young people’s social support and negative social interactions in explaining mental health inequities between 2SLGBTQ+ youth and their peers.Release date: 2024-11-20

- Articles and reports: 82-003-X202400700001Description: Individuals who are nearing death report a preference to be cared for and to die outside of hospital. The reasons for this preference are complex and multifactorial. This study examined differences in the use of end-of-life acute care and the location of death among residents with dementia in rural long-term care homes, compared with those in urban long-term care homes, in Ontario, Canada.Release date: 2024-07-17
- Articles and reports: 82-003-X202400600002Description: Optimal oral health is an essential element of healthy aging. Oral health problems such as tooth loss, periodontal disease, and dry mouth accumulate throughout adult life and worsen with increasing age. Using data from the 2019/2020 Canadian Health Survey on Seniors, this study explores the link between dental insurance, income, and oral health care access among seniors (aged 65 and over) in Canada. It contributes to the understanding of oral health care among seniors before the implementation of the Canadian Dental Care Plan.Release date: 2024-06-19
- Articles and reports: 82-003-X202400400001Description: Oral health is a crucial component of overall health, influencing both physical and mental well-being. Yet, despite the important role that access to and use of oral health care services play in maintaining optimal oral health, substantial disparities remain in access to oral health care services across population groups in Canada. Using data from the 2022 Canadian Community Health Survey, this study examines the association of dental insurance with oral health care access and use in Canada while accounting for income and sociodemographic factors. It contributes to a baseline of oral health care disparities before the implementation of the Canadian Dental Care Plan.Release date: 2024-04-17
- Articles and reports: 82-003-X202400400002Description: Children’s oral health can affect functional capacities, psychological well-being, and social integration. Additionally, health behaviours established in childhood extend into adulthood and can influence oral health outcomes later in life. Using data from the 2019 Canadian Health Survey on Children and Youth, this study investigates the association between dental insurance, income, and dental care access for Canadian children and youth aged 1 to 17 years. It contributes to a baseline understanding of oral health care use before the implementation of the Canadian Dental Care Plan.Release date: 2024-04-17
