- Articles and reports: 36-28-0001202600400003Description: In recent years, the entry earnings of newly admitted immigrants to Canada have exhibited substantial year-to-year fluctuations. Notably, first-year earnings increased by 21% for the 2020 admission cohort relative to the previous cohort and by 11% for the 2021 cohort, followed by a 13% decline for the 2022 cohort—despite a continued modest rise in the median wage among all Canadian workers. This article examines the extent to which these fluctuations reflect changes in immigrant selection and broader labour market conditions. Using data from the Longitudinal Immigration Database, the analysis focuses on admission cohorts from 2015 to 2022 and measures earnings (annual wages or salaries) in immigrants’ first full calendar year after admission.Release date: 2026-04-22

- 31. Immigration and Firm Productivity: Evidence from the Canadian Employer-Employee Dynamics Database ArchivedArticles and reports: 11F0019M2020014Description:
Previous studies on the impact of immigration on productivity in developed countries remain inconclusive, and most analyses are abstracted from firms where production actually takes place. This study examines the empirical relationship between immigration and firm-level productivity in Canada. It uses a data file derived from linking the Canadian Employer-Employee Dynamics Database that tracks firms over time with the Longitudinal Immigration Data file (IMDB) that includes sociodemographic characteristics at landing for immigrants who arrived in Canada after 1980.

- 39. Labour Market Outcomes Among Refugees to Canada ArchivedArticles and reports: 11F0019M2019007Description:
Canada welcomed over 830,000 refugees from the 1980s to 2000s. However, their economic outcomes, especially the variation among major refugee groups, have not been examined comprehensively. Using the Longitudinal Immigration Database, this paper examines the labour market outcomes of refugees from 13 source countries with large inflows to Canada over the 1980-to-2009 period. The analysis first compares employment rates and earnings among refugees from the 13 source countries. It further compares each refugee group with economic-class and family-class immigrants who arrived during the same period.
