    Release date: 2024-02-23

  • Articles and reports: 82-003-X202301200002
Description: The validity of survival estimates from cancer registry data depends, in part, on the identification of the deaths of deceased cancer patients. People whose deaths are missed seemingly live on forever and are informally referred to as “immortals”, and their presence in registry data can result in inflated survival estimates. This study assesses the issue of immortals in the Canadian Cancer Registry (CCR) using a recently proposed method that compares the survival of long-term survivors of cancers for which “statistical” cure has been reported with that of similar people from the general population.

  • Data Visualization: 71-607-X2021028
Description: The dashboard presents data that are relevant for monitoring the impacts of COVID-19 on mortality in Canada. It includes the latest weekly death data, historical weekly death data back to 2014, updated adjusted (i.e. the estimated number of weekly deaths) and expected weekly death counts produced for the 2020 reference year from the Canadian Vital Statistics: Death database (CVS:D). The CVS:D is an administrative survey that collects demographic and medical (cause of death) information from all provincial and territorial vital statistics registries on all deaths in Canada. With this tool, data users can explore current and historical weekly trends of deaths for each province and territory. Key variables such as age group and sex are also presented in interactive charts. The interactive tool allows users to examine excess deaths by comparing the trend in weekly deaths in 2020 to the trends in weekly deaths in previous years.

  • Articles and reports: 82-003-X202300900002
Description: According to recent Canadian estimates, over two in five Canadians will likely develop cancer in their lifetime, and one in four is expected to die of it. The lifetime probabilities of developing cancer and dying from cancer are useful summary statistics that describe the impact of cancer within a population. However, there is little information on how lifetime probabilities of developing cancer and dying from cancer have changed over time. This study aims to present detailed lifetime probabilities of developing cancer and dying from cancer by sex and cancer type, and to describe changes in these lifetime probabilities over time among the Canadian population.

  • Table: 91-213-X
Description: This publication contains population estimates by age and sex for Canada, provinces, territories, census divisions, census metropolitan areas and economic regions. It also includes, for provinces and territories, estimates by age, sex and marital status as well as estimates for census families.

The estimates are based on the 2001 Census results, which have been adjusted for net census undercoverage. The publication also includes statistics for the demographic components that were used to produce the population estimates (births, deaths, marriages, divorces, immigration, emigration, net temporary emigration, returning emigration, internal migration and non-permanent residents) by age and sex. In addition, the publication contains highlights of current demographic trends and a description of the methodology.

The print version of the publication includes a CD-ROM that provides additional data such as a chronological series of estimates by various levels of geography. With regard to provinces and territories, the estimates date back to 1971 (tables and animated age pyramid), 1986 for census divisions, census metropolitan areas and economic regions as well as census families.

The time series available on the CD-ROM can be easily captured and manipulated by analysts who want to create customized demographic analyses in any spreadsheet program. The population figures can be used, for example, to calculate per-capita rates required for market research, quantitative analysis and planning.

  • Table: 84-214-X
    Description:

This compendium of vital statistics includes summary data on births, deaths, marriages and divorces. The introduction covers the data sources, data quality, and methods pertaining to each event, and includes a glossary defining the terms used. The first chapter is a brief overview of vital statistics for 1996. Subsequent chapters treat marriage, divorce, birth, fetal and infant mortality, total mortality, causes of death, vital statistics by census division, and international comparisons. Most charts and tables show Canada data for 1986 though 1996, while the charts and tables for causes of death show Canada data for 1979 through1996. Data for the provinces and territories are usually shown for 1995 and 1996. Appendices include population denominator data, age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) calculation methods, and leading causes of death methodology.

Description: There has been increasing scrutiny of opioid prescribing following injury given concerns that prescribed opioids may contribute to addiction and/or overdose. This study aimed to better understand the relationship between injury, opioids prescribed pre- and post-injury, and non-medical drug poisoning. Focusing on working age (15-65 years old) residents of the Fraser Health region, this study used a linked administrative dataset to better understand the relationships between injury, whether the injury was work-related or sustained outside of the workplace, pain management medication in the form of opioid and opioid agonist therapy prescriptions before and after injury, and potential non-medical drug poisoning.
