It also includes the cost of tuition for full-time studies at Canadian degree-granting postsecondary public institutions for the current academic year (September to April). Data for this dashboard is related to the following three surveys: Tuition and Living Accommodation Costs (TLAC), Elementary-Secondary Education Survey (ESES), and the Postsecondary Student Information System (PSIS). Each survey will be released separately at a later date.
For elementary to secondary education, this interactive tool provides an overview of the total enrolment and graduation counts for the five most recent school years. For enrolments, the tool features counts in public schools, private/independent schools, and home-schooling, as well as official languages programs. For graduations, this tool features counts of graduates from secondary schools within public schools or private/independent schools.
For the postsecondary education, this interactive tool features characteristics of students enrolled in, or graduating from postsecondary programs offered in public postsecondary institutions in Canada (such as gender and status of student in Canada). It also provides an overview of program characteristics based on the International Standard Classification of Education (ISCED 2011) and on the Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP Canada 2021) STEM/BHASE groupings. It also details new enrolments (by gender, age group, and student status) for the most common credential programs offered within universities and colleges.

Statistics Canada’s Postsecondary Student Information System (PSIS) provides comprehensive data on current and recent students at Canadian colleges and universities that receive funding from a provincial or territorial ministry of education. The PSIS does not cover private colleges. Statistics Canada's Census of Population, another major source of education data, does not distinguish between public and private colleges. However, data on private colleges can be found in tax records. This study uses the T2202 Tuition and Enrolment Certificate tax file to determine the number and characteristics of international students studying at private colleges in Canada.Release date: 2024-10-08

Description:Canada is an active competitor in the global economy, an arena in which our knowledge and skills are vital assets. At a time when goods, services and investment flow more freely into and out of the country, much of our international success comes from our knowledge-intensive industries. As a result, the need for skilled workers has intensified and higher education has become an even more important determinant of Canada's overall competitiveness and economic well-being than in the past. Canada's postsecondary education system encompasses universities, colleges and trade/vocational institutions. In 1995 there were 1.67 million part-time and full-time postsecondary students, 52% of whom attended university. Universities, who finances are the focus of this article, therefore serve as major providers of the higher education that is critical to our prosperity.

Description:This paper outlines the structure of payroll taxes and documents evidence on the level, growth and role of each component over the last three decades for Canada and for each province. Levied by both the federal and provincial governments, payroll taxes in Canada include four major components: i) unemployment insurance (UI) premiums; ii) Canada/Quebec Pension Plan (C/QPP) contributions; iii) workers compensation (WC) premiums; and iv) the provincial health/post-secondary education (H/E) tax levied by Quebec, Manitoba, Ontario and Newfoundland. While the UI and C/QPP components are levied on both employers and employees, the WC and H/E components are levied on employers only. Our main findings are 1) payroll taxes have increased substantially over the last three decades in Canada as a whole and in every province; 2) the structure, level, growth and role of each component of payroll taxes vary remarkably from one province to another; 3) the expansion of the UI component in recent years has been the largest contributor to the rise in payroll taxes across every province in the country; and 4) despite significant growth in recent years, payroll taxes are still much lower in Canada than in most other western industrialized countries.

Description:The key hypothesis of this paper is that time use data bases make possible a broader view of the benefits and costs of human capital than is otherwise possible. This achievement is enabled by a set of integrated information on not only educational attainment but also on time devoted to formal and informal study, to paid and unpaid work of economic value, to work of civic value, to leisure activities, and to the educating of children by parents. It is argued that such information is central to human capital theory, though much of it, especially on the leisure costs of investment in human capital, has been hitherto ignored. This new information is important because it can be used to inform the debate over the key issues in this field -- for example, the value of increased public support to formal education -- by measuring previously overlooked aspects of the benefits and costs of investment in human capital.

Description:Inequality in weekly earnings increased in the eighties in Canada. The growth in inequality occurred in conjunction with three facts. First, real hourly wages of young workers dropped more than 10%. Second, the percentage of employees working 35-40 hours per week in their main job fell and the fraction of employees working 50 hours or more per week rose. Third, there was a growing tendency for highly paid workers to work long workweeks. We argue that any set of explanations of the increase in weekly earnings inequality must reconcile these three facts. Sectoral changes in the distribution of employment by industry and union status explain roughly 30% of the rise in inequality. The reduction in real minimum wages and the decline of average firm size explain very little of the growth in age-earnings differentials. Skill-biased technological change could have increased both the dispersion of hourly wages and the dispersion of weekly hours of work and thus, is consistent a priori with the movements observed. Yet other factors may have played an equally important - if not more important - role. The growth in competitive pressures, possible shifts in the bargaining power (between firms and labour) towards firms, the greater locational mobility of firms, the increase in Canada's openness to international trade, the rise in fixed costs of labour and possibly in training costs may be major factors behind the growth in weekly earnings inequality in Canada.

Description:This study attempts to compare the earnings of men and women on an equal footing by concentrating on recent postsecondary graduates and using survey data on a number of earnings-related characteristics. The data cover three graduating classes of university and community college students: 1982, 1986 and 1990. These data indicate that the gender earnings gap among graduates has narrowed in recent years. In fact among the most recent class, we found that female university graduates are rewarded slightly better than their male counterparts after controlling for experience, job tenure, education and hours of work. A small gender gap persists among community college graduates: about three-and-a-half percent on an hourly wage basis. For all graduates, the earnings gap tended to increase with age, even after controlling for previous work experience.

Description:Employment equity legislation is becoming more prevalent in Canadian labour markets, yet -- other than broad availability numbers -- the labour market experiencesof designated groups have not been well documented. Using the National Graduates Survey of 1992, this report profiles the early labour market experiences ofvisible minorities, Aboriginal peoples and persons with disabilities who graduated from Canadian universities and community colleges in 1990. In general, we find thatthe earnings of designated group members are very similar to the earnings of their classmates. However, we also find that members of these groups are more likely tobe unemployed and are less likely to participate in the labour force than others in their class.

Search help
How do I use the filters and the search box?
-
You can initiate a search by entering keywords or selecting filters (e.g., under Subject, Geography, etc.) on the left side of the page.
-
Filters can be used together or in any combination. Each time you select a filter, the results on the page are updated.
-
To start a new search, click on the Clear all button above the search box or deselect each filter.
-
Specified keywords and filters appear above the search box. You can deselect any or all the tags to refine or clear your search.
How do I refine my search?
-
You can enter keywords in the search box. It is not necessary to use “+” or “, “ or “AND”.
-
You can delete some or all of the keywords from your search string.
-
Quotes around keywords limit the search to a specific phrase.
-
For example, “labour force survey” will limit results to products containing this phrase.
-
-
Use “or” between keywords to obtain results that contain one or more search terms.
-
For example, labour or force or survey will limit results to products containing any or all of these words.
-
How does the search work?
-
This search looks for results that have your query term in the title, description, subject, geography, product number or other information about the product.
-
For example, when searching the term ‘Diseases’, all results with the word ‘Diseases’ in the title, description or tagged the subject appear.
-
-
The text within an article or publication are not searched. For full text searching of articles, use the site search.
Sort help
How are the results ordered?

- By date – sorts results by product release date starting with the most recent.
- By relevance is only needed or beneficial when you use the search box and submit a search query. Results are ordered by a combination of where the search term appears in the content, e.g., if it appears in the title, it likely means the product is more relevant to your search; how up to date or new the content in the product is; how popular the product is; and other factors.
- By title – sorts results alphabetically.
