1. 2026 Census of Population Content Consultation Results: What we heard from Canadians

Description: Data from the Census of Population are important for all communities and are vital to plan services that support education, employment, transportation, health care and housing. To maintain the relevance of the census, Statistics Canada evaluates and reviews the census questionnaire content for each census cycle. In preparation for the 2026 Census, Statistics Canada consulted Canadians from fall 2022 to spring 2023. Detailed responses were received from organizations and individuals representing federal, provincial, territorial and local government departments; First Nations people, Métis and Inuit; the general public; academia; special interest groups; and the private sector.
This report focuses on the findings of the 2026 Census data needs consultation and stakeholder discussions. Chapter 1 explains whom we consulted. Chapter 2 describes the strength of census data users’ needs such as the size of the population of interest. Chapter 3 provides an assessment of the perceived data gaps in census content and the availability and suitability of alternative data sources. Chapter 4 focuses on information needs by census topic and how preparations for the 2024 Census Test will help meet these needs.

3. Hierarchical File, 2006 Census (Public Use Microdata Files)

Description: This hierarchical file provides data on the characteristics of the population. The 2006 Census Public Use Microdata Files (PUMFs) contain samples of anonymous responses to the 2006 Census questionnaire. The files have been carefully scrutinized to ensure the complete confidentiality of the individual responses. The individual file was released on March 4, 2010 and the hierarchical file is available as of today, May 2, 2011.
Microdata files are unique among census products in that they give users access to non-aggregated data. The PUMFs user can group and manipulate these variables to suit data and research requirements. Tabulations excluded from other census products can be created or relationships between variables can be analysed using different statistical tests. PUMFs provide quick access to a comprehensive social and economic database about Canada and its people.

Most of the subject matter covered by the census is included in the microdata files. To ensure the respondents' anonymity, geographic identifiers have been restricted to provinces/territories and large metropolitan areas.

This product, offered on CD-ROM, contains the data file (in ASCII format), user documentation and SAS and SPSS program source codes to enable you to read the set of records. Note: users will require knowledge of data manipulation and retrieval software such as SAS or SPSS to be able to use this product.

Description: This interactive dashboard allows the user to visualize the factors of population growth and how they have changed over time for census metropolitan areas and census agglomerations. The dashboard shows population, population growth, factors of population growth (natural increase, international migration, interprovincial migration, intraprovincial migration), and the proportion of the population by age group. The user can view the data by selecting a census metropolitan area or a census agglomeration of interest as well as a year of interest.

Research has shown that in a knowledge-based economy and society, economic opportunities and active participation in the broader society are increasingly linked to an individual's ability to command and control his or her own life. It is this context that makes the distribution of adult learning across the population of such importance.
Canada has had a long interest in better understanding the distribution of adult literacy and learning across population sub-groups. Canada participated in the first round of data collection in the International Adult Literacy Survey (ALL) in 1994. Canada was also a lead country in the international Adult Literacy and Life Skills Survey (ALL) in 2003 ((the Canadian component is called the International Literacy and Skills Survey (IALSS)).
The data collected by these surveys provide a wealth of information on the characteristics of adult learners and have generated a number of research studies. This article presents some of the key findings of a recent report that provides detailed information on the characteristics of adult learners in Canada, including the links between participation in adult education and training and literacy skill levels, education, family background and age.

Over the last 30 years or so, a dramatic reversal has taken place on Canadian university campuses. According to the 1971 Census, 68% of 25 to 29 year-old university graduates were male. By 2006, women accounted for 60% of university graduates between the ages of 25 and 29.
This article summarizes the results of recent research that set out to explain the large gender gap in university participation. The focus of the analysis is on the extent to which differences in the characteristics of boys and girls at age 15 account for the gender gap in university participation at age 19. Factors found to play a key role include differences in school marks at age 15; in standardized test scores in reading at age 15; in study habits; in parental expectations; and in the earnings advantage of university graduates over those with no more than a high school education. The analysis is based on data from the Youth in Transition Survey (YITS), Cycle 3 which collected information from YITS participants in 2003, when they were 19 years old.

In 2000, for every 100 borrowers in repayment, about 35 borrowers were eligible for Interest Relief, but less than 16 borrowers took it.

Description:
Hidden human populations, the Internet, and other networked structures conceptualized mathematically as graphs are inherently hard to sample by conventional means, and the most effective study designs usually involve procedures that select the sample by adaptively following links from one node to another. Sample data obtained in such studies are generally not representative at face value of the larger population of interest. However, a number of design and model based methods are now available for effective inference from such samples. The design based methods have the advantage that they do not depend on an assumed population model, but do depend for their validity on the design being implemented in a controlled and known way, which can be difficult or impossible in practice. The model based methods allow greater flexibly in the design, but depend on modeling of the population using stochastic graph models and also depend on the design being ignorable or of known form so that it can be included in the likelihood or Bayes equations. For both the design and the model based methods, the weak point often is the lack of control in how the initial sample is obtained, from which link-tracing commences. The designs described in this paper offer a third way, in which the sample selection probabilities become step by step less dependent on the initial sample selection. A Markov chain "random walk" model idealizes the natural design tendencies of a link-tracing selection sequence through a graph. This paper introduces uniform and targeted walk designs in which the random walk is nudged at each step to produce a design with the desired stationary probabilities. A sample is thus obtained that in important respects is representative at face value of the larger population of interest, or that requires only simple weighting factors to make it so.

The NHS Profile is one data product that provides a statistical overview of user selected geographic areas based on several detailed variables and/or groups of variables. Other data products include data tables which represent a series of cross tabulations ranging in complexity and are available for various levels of geography.

Description:
The Postal Code^OM Conversion File Plus (PCCF+) is a SAS© control program and set of associated datasets derived from the Postal Code^OM Conversion File (PCCF), a Postal Code^OM population weight file, the Geographic Attribute File, Health Region boundary files, and other supplementary data. PCCF+ automatically assigns a range of Statistics Canada’s standard geographic areas and other geographic identifiers based on Postal Codes^OM. The PCCF+ differs from the PCCF in that it uses population-weighted random allocation for Postal Codes^OM that link to more than one geographic area.
