Introduction

This activity helps students understand the language and terminology related to the census. It forms the basis for students' learning throughout the rest of the Agriculture at a Glance activities.

Curriculum connections

Geography
  • applies methods of geographic inquiry and research skills.
Family Studies/Home Economics
  • investigates food-related issues.
Science
  • investigates issues using scientific methods of inquiry.

Notes to teacher

Students will begin to record a glossary of terms with this article, and will add to the glossary as they read other articles in Canadian Agriculture at a Glance.

Teaching and learning strategies

  1. The teacher discusses the concept of a census and how it is conducted in Canada.
  2. After the discussion, students read the article "What you need to know before you Glance," pages 3 to 10 in Canadian Agriculture at a Glance (PDF).
  3. Students begin their glossary of terms by adding the new terminology and definitions to the chart in this activity's worksheet.

Assessment/evaluation strategies

  1. Check glossaries for completion and understanding.

Accommodation and enrichment strategies

  1. Some students may require assistance in order to complete written work.
  2. Students with special needs may work with a partner to complete a task.

Suggestions for further research

  • This activity can be used with any of the research activities in the other lessons.
  • Students can use 2001 Census of Agriculture data in E-STAT for data analysis, graphing and mapping activities for specific geographic areas of local interest.
